I wrote in a few weeks ago that my Mom's dog Sheila was diagnosed with IMHA on 5/27. Her PVC was in the low 20s. The vet kept her in hospital for 5 days and then we took her home and have kept her on prednisone along with another medication (can't remember the name now) and an antibiotic. After a week of being home her PVC was 37 so they kept her on meds. Today her blood tests came back and her PVC is 41. The vet said she's doing really great and she is producing everything like a normal dog. She is now taking prednisone once a day. We will still always need to keep an eye on her but she is better than we ever expected. Her energy is coming back. I just wanted to share the good news and remind everyone that there are many survivors. I will continue to keep my fingers crossed for Sheila and for everyone affected by this condition.

Laura, That is really great news. Just be very careful with the reductions of the meds and keep us posted because everyone needs to be reminded that dogs can survive this. Penny

Laura...I am so glad to hear of Sheila's recovery. Did she ever have to be transfused? My beloved nine year old cocker spaniel (Maggie) is having a 2nd transfusion today (she was at 20 rbc for a few days after her 1st transfusion, but dropped to 16 today). She's been on prednisone and other various med's for three days (since her 1st transfusion). I hope, and pray, that this 2nd transfusion will give her immune system time to catch up. Thank you for your kind words to those of us whose fur-babies are still "touch and go". I hope to be able to report good news in a few days. God Bless.
