Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Good news for Ernie, great start to the new year!

As some of you may remember from my earlier threads Ernie had a bit of a setback in his treatment when his white cell count dropped through the floor. His last blood test showed his white cells at 1.7, and a very low platelet count too, though his RBC stayed within normal levels. As well as his AIHA treatment Ernie was on phenobarb for his epilepsy and after his last blood test I found a couple of articles that suggested the phenobarb could be responsible for his illness in the first place. Obviously treating his AIHA was going to be problematic if he was still taking the drug that triggered it. Taking him off the phenobarb was a necessary risk and I weaned him off it over a period of about 4 weeks. He's been completely off it for just over a week now, and so far no sign of his seizures returning. He stayed on a maintenance dose of 2.5mg pred eod while we were reducing his phenobarb, and had a blood test today. His RBC, HCT, and platelet counts are all normal. WBC count is very slightly above normal but the vet isn't concerned about it. This is the best set of results he's had in 3 months so we're now going to stop his pred completely and test again in 2 weeks to see how he's holding up. 3 months ago Ernie was a very sick little dog and I honestly didn't expect him to be here to see the new year with me. It's been a tough 3 months and I can't imagine how I would have coped without the support and advice from this board. A very happy new year to all of you and your furkids.

I am so happy for you both Sue! Fantastic news.

Boy is also doing quite well, touch wood, and it has been just wonderful that he has still been here with us to share Christmas, I did not believe that could happen. What a bonus, and I have been grateful for every special moment with him this Christmas.

Wishing all of you a very happy and healthy 2008.

Brilliant news for both you and little Ern.

He is going to need his coat over the next few days if it remains as cold as it is!!!

Jasper is going back next week for his blood test and possible reduction. Just aswell its not this week having stolen and eaten a box of chocolate wafer thins!!!! Naughty as ever!

He stole a giant toblerone a few years ago and it cost us about 70 quid to make him sick!!!

Wishing you a healthy and happy new year,

Jackie and Jasper.

Glad Jasper is still doing well. Ern managed to steal a box of 6 mince pies and sneak them behind the sofa without anyone noticing. Even the other 2 dogs didn't notice so he must have been pretty quiet about it. Having stolen them he obviously decided he wasn't that keen after all. When I discovered the crime there was a lot of ripped packaging and 2 mince pies that he'd nibbled and then spat out. The other 4 were still intact, but I couldn't quite fancy one somehow... lol
