Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Good conversation with Maggie's primary care vet

Thought I'd share some positive news.

Maggie's primary care vet called, having returned from a Thanksgiving vacation and we went over the events and discussions of the long weekend.

In summary, Maggie's CBC one week prior to Thanksgiving returned a 24 HCT and a responsive absolute reticulocyte count of 233,000.

The Friday after Thanksgiving, Maggie's CBC results were a 29.5 HCT and a 73,000 reticulocyte count.

So Maggie's HCT rose nicely while the reticulocytes retreated.

I told Doctor B that I tried to give Maggie the 400mg cyclosporine as suggested by the emergency internal medicine specialist but upon email exchanges with Dr. Dodds, returned Maggie to her normal maintenance dose. Doctor B. was completely fine with this, and was more upbeat that Maggie's HCT was approaching 30 saying that her approach would also be to wait. As Doctor B. put it, while Maggie's reticulocytes were lower, it's not like they were at '0'. She also added that while there could be many 'right' approaches to take, if she were to pick any one person to listen to, it would be Dr. Dodds.

It was just nice to get validation about my decisions regarding Maggie's care and also to hear Doctor B.'s tone as more positive about Maggie's overall progress.

I asked about putting Maggie on clopidigrel (Plavix) to prevent clotting, and she felt it was under control, but to ask the internal medicine specialist. She said it is very expensive, but I could always order from Canada, however by the time I received it, Maggie would probably already be better. This is the first time where I've heard Maggie's vet sounds better than cautious about Maggie's prognosis.

Good news, for sure! Dr Dodds is so helpful. Keep up the good teamwork with your vets and Maggie will continue to fight a good fight and we will keep praying!
