Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Golden named Sadie diagnosed with Evans Syndrome

Reposting for Mary Sue, as this was under Johnny's thread....

the vet just diagnosed our sweet 12-yr old rescue golden (also named sadie!) with evan's syndrome- we took her in for a checkup because she had stopped eating and was getting very lethargic. she would only eat if i hand-fed her little bites of food.
we really don't know anything about this disease or the prognosis...the vet said her platelet and red blood cell counts were very low. we have her on two medications that we pray will increase her appetite and help her get well.
we would appreciate any encouraging information about the disease- thank you, and God bless all of y'all who are going through a pet illness.

Dear Mary Sue,

I am so sorry to hear about Sadie's diagnosis with Evans Syndrome.

Can you please tell us what drugs Sadie is on, the dosages and her blood count numbers?

Please visit Joanne's website - Meisha's Hope - www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson.
There is LOTS of information about IMHA, ITP and Evans on this website, along with SUccess Stories that will encourage you, give you hope and see what worked for other dogs.

Sadie should be on Prednisone, perhaps even a second drug Azathioprine (Imuran) or Cyclosporine.
She should be on stomach protectants such as Pepcid and Sulcralfate as these immune suppressant drugs cause a fair bit of damage.
We also on this forum use a natural remedy like Milk Thistle, to protect our dog's livers, I believe Denmarin is the drug used to do this also.

When do you take Sadie back for her next PCV check?

Tell us all you can so we can offer support and advice to you.

Sam & Millie.

Mary Sue,

When a dog has Evans syndrome, he/she has autoimmune hemoltyic anemia/immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (AIHA/IMHA) and immune mediated thromboctopeina (ITP) at the same time. You can learn about AIHA/IMHA at my Web site which Samantha mentioned but this hotlink will take you there:

http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/

be sure to follow the links on the bottom of first page to many sites on AIHA/IMHA that will be very helpful to you and do read the Success Stories pages. They will show you what has worked for other dogs in regard to treatment options as well as give you a lot of HOPE. You might want to read about Casper who is the May 2008 Success Story who also was diagnosed with Evans Syndrome

You can learn about ITP at this Web site:

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/immune-mediated_thrombocytopen.html

I know this is a lot to take in all at once so read the material slowly and come back here and ask lots of questions. Evans Syndome is difficult but dogs can and do survive it and go on to live happy healthly lives. I pray this will be the case for your most beloved Sadie.

Hi Mary Sue,
As Joanne mentioned, my Casper has Evans Syndrome, too. He is currently on Prednisone, Azathioprine(Imuran), Pepcid, Milk Thistle. He was given blood transfusions, Human Immunoglobulin and Cyclosporine, Denamarin in the past as well. It can take a while for the meds to work but we pray that your Sadie will shows signs of improvement soon.
