Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Go Rosie Go!!

two weeks on .5 of pred. faithful with BioPrep and a PCV of 42!! CBC test showed 42 she's back up to where we were before the crash of a few points. So now we are on .5 of pred for 4-6wks just to make sure there isnt another drop.

I have a question? I have a healthy dog Daisy and I need to really get her back on track we havent done any heartworm or rabies vac. or vaccines at all since this has happened to Rosie. What suggestions do you have? what type of heartworm pill is good and is Rabies vaccine okay to do?

Thanks Guys...

Hi Pam & Rosie

Lots of congratulations to you and Rosie - what a fantastic PCV! Amazing how we all get excited over blood numbers.

PS. Im interested in other answers too to you questions - I am in the same situation with Bonnie, my border collie.

All the very best to you, Im so pleased.

Pam, that's awesome to see the PCV all the way back up to 42%! Great job!

Most of the people I talk to regarding heartworm use interceptor. If you have a hearder type dog (collies for ex.) then you should avoid the heartworm preventatives like heartguard due to the ingrediant ivermectin. I think that heartguard has to be chewed for the ivermectin to be effective whereas the interceptor doesn't! ALSO, interceptor works not only for heartworms but also hooks and whips!!! SO, IMO, a much better and wiser choice to go with in regards to heartworm prevention. I use none on mine here in Canada...maybe I should but these worms just aren't a problem like they are down south. OH, and then there's revolution...not my favorite type due to it being systemic. I'm just not a fan of it.

Rabies vaccination? I guess that depends on where you are andthe laws for your area. I'd get a titer done *before* I give a vac or booster. If it's a 3 year vac then wait the 3 years...don't do it cause the vet recommends it sooner.

Here's a neat journal to read...

....yeah...the link is that long! :) Also, the rabies challenge fund site has valuable knowledge!

Flees & ticks....I always advise DE (diatomacious earth). Look it up.

Good luck,
