Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Ginger's blood work came back

Ginger's blood test results came back today her PCV is still at 28. However her absolute retic was 159,000 and her % was 2.8%. The vet stated she did have regenerative anemia so that's good news.

My vets wants Ginger to go on 100 mg of Neoral 2x a day for starters. She also wants her to continue with 20 mg of predisone everyday and 50mg of Imuran EOD and the once the numbers start going up we will reduce the pred. How does that combination and dosage sound?

I have Ginger on 450 mg of Milk Thistle and 20mg of pepcid 2x a day, should I have her on anything else to protect her liver and stomach?

Thanks for your help,

I don't know if anyone else was advised this- we were told to feed her with her meds and to add white rice to her diet....which I did for a long time. It was easy to do.

Hi Cheryl. Good news that Ginger is regenerative. I'll bet that once the Neoral and Imuran have had a chance to start working, you will see a rise in her PCV. My dog, Duck, takes all three of those meds though at a much lower maintenance dose and is doing very well. Besides the milk thistle and pepcid, I would ask your vet about adding sucralfate. It will provide extra protection for Ginger's stomach. It is a prescription medication but not at all expensive.

Please keep us posted on Ginger's progress.

definately CARAFATE to coat her stomach from the prednisone.
you might also want to look into adding SOLOXINE to her meds, that prevents any thyroid disease and dr. dodds swears by it.
