Ginger went in for her blood work and her PCV is now up to 40, her vet put her on 5 mg of predisone EOD and 1 tablet of the Imuran EOD. The vet did a scrapping of the ulcer on her tongue and it appears to be an infection, she also has infected ears and a bladder infection (poor thing). So now in addition to the pred and the Imuran she gets Clavamox 2 times a day. She has been on the Clavamox for three days now and already the ulcer on her tongue looks slightly better. She goes back in two weeks for her PCV again. I was just wondering if all dogs with AIHA have to go back every two weeks and have their PCV's checked for the rest of their lives, or will my vet want us to come back on a monthly basis soon? This disease is very expensive to treat, but of course it is worth every penny, I just hope we can start going once a month or so soon.

Cheryl, That is fantistic news for Ginger! and hopefully all the infections will get straightened out for her. When Holly's numbers started going up we went to blood draw every three weeks because every 2 weeks was to hard on her. You are suppose to do blood draws a week or two after each reduction. Was Ginger on 5mg every day and now EOD? Because that is a fast reduction. We did Holly 5mg every day, then 2.5mg every day, then 2.5 every other day, and then every third day, and of course now we are back to 5mg a day because her retic count is over the normal level. Maybe your vet did that because of the infections?? Linda

Prior to the 5mg EOD, Ginger was on 10mg EOD other day, so I guess this is not a too big of reduction. So far so good and she will be retested again in about another week. They have such a hard time finding her vein for the blood drawl, but she is so good about it.

Cheryl, I just thought I would respond to your question in regard to frequency of blood checks. Once a dog with AIHA/IMHA has been in remission for a while most vets will recommend doing blood work less often. With my Meisha we went from doing blood work weekly or more ofen to every two weeks and then monthly. Once she was in remission for a while we did blood work every 3 months. In the nearly 10 years Meisha lived with AHIA we never went longer then 3 months between blood work and for us that seemed to work fine. If there was a problem we usually found it before it got out of hand and if all was well we had another reason to celebrate. We did a full CBC and chem profile every March, June, September and December with a full thyroid panel done every March and other testing as needed. I have heard all sorts of other options from other AIHA/IMHA caregives. I know one gal who did do blood work every 2 weeks for years and some who only did it once per year or even less. The frequecy of blood checks does seem to depend on the vet and the comfort level of the owner caregiver as well as how the dog is dong.
