IMy dog Matilda has PRCA. I have been giving here gastroprotectant everyother day. I give it to her with her prednisolone but I been advised that it can interfere with the absorbtion of her pred. Is the the case? I was told that it was ok to give them to her together. Would appreciate your thoughts best Lola Marlin

I don't think you have to worry about Prilosec interfering with the drugs she's on. If you were using something like sucralfate which coats the stomach then you'd have to adjust the scheduling due to absorption issues. I give Tessy's prilosec (omeprazole) with her meds and know of lots others who also do.

Lola - It may depend on the med you are using... My Drs. recommended Pepcid (that's the brand - I'm forgetting the generic name right now) and I was able to give that an hour before meals and then Pred and other meds after the meal. Dr. Dodds recommended a thyroid supplement for my dog as well and I give that an hour before his meals with the Pepcid. Murray was diagnosed with non-regenerative IMHA at the level of the marrow which I understand to be somewhat different than PRCA but, like Matilda, he showed no signs of regeneration (reticulocytes) for months and really wasn't responding to the meds. I found Dr. Dodds to be extremely helpful and smart and hope you have a good experience with her as well - I understand your frustration in dealing with some of the doctors. But,I've been reading your posts and you certainly are all over this for Matilda and that's so important! I hope you get some answers for her soon! Take care- Bonnie

Hi Lola - He did, thankfully, and the odds were somewhat stacked against him. First, he is older - he was probably over 10 when he was diagosed. Then, he developed a complication as a result of the immuno-suppressant meds. He was on high doses of pred with no response, then they added aza. (brand name Imuran) with no response and then cyclosporin was added to the mix. He was only on cyclosporin a short time when his white count fell dangerously low and he became septic - essentially his immune system was too suppressed and developed an infection his body couldn't fight. In retrospect, the internist was being too aggressive and I didn't know enough then to push harder - we saw the drop in his white count and I questioned it but the dr. wasn't concerned. Now I know better and as people will say on this board, "you have to be your dog's advocate - so true! So, clearly, we switched drs. and they pulled him off all the meds (except a maintenance dose of pred) to give his body a chance to fight along with an army of antibiotics. He was hospitalized and needed a plasma transfusion and, honestly, things weren't looking good for him. And, then he rallied a little bit to the point where we could take him home and see how he did. He slowly, steadily improved and his red blood cells came back as well. Sorry to bore you with the long story of Murray but I've been where you are and know how frightening and helpless you can feel at times so I thought it might help to know his story because, when you least expect it, they can turn around. I believe Dr. Dodds played a big role in his recovery - Murray had been borderline hypo-thyroid before his IMHA - nothing the drs. paid any attention to - after getting smarter (mainly through this community) I pushed for the thyroid testing and it was Dr. Dodds who pushed for the supplement which may have been the key to stimulating his marrow to kick back in. I will be hoping you hear some good news for Matilda soon! Take care - and try to get some rest. Bonnie

I checked wit the vets ( ad they checked the manual!!!) and the Omezparole or Losec is fine and doesn't interfere with the absorption of the other drugs. My vet thinks it's the best on the market...: :) Lola
