Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Frontline, Advantage -Multi

Two vets suggested that the above are OK for an immune mediated dog (not Advanticks due to "Pyrithrine").
The "Multi" is suppose to work on fleas, heartworm, earmites & ticks. I am very leary, but Layla is a tick magnet!!! Sounds great but I don't know. Any advice, anyone?? Patrice??

Her last few PCVs was ALL in the normal range!!! Yeah!

Thanks so much.

Oh yeah, she passed her Therapy Dog test w/ flying colors! & is an official member of Therapy Dogs Unoted!
But I think I should avoid sick people?

If this were me, and I am always in nearly the same place you are with Chance, I would avoid using flea preventatives if at all possible. Unless you have severe infestations of fleas, try to deal with the environment around your house FIRST to eliminate the fleas. They don't generally transmit any deadly diseases (although their bites can lead to an allergic reaction) and so this isn't a life or death treatment.

On the other hand, ticks do carry deadly diseases. It's very hard to remove them from around your property also. It takes great dedication. If you are worried about using these products, then examine your lifestyle carefully and decide if you might be able to avoid a lot of the "outside" with a few changes. How about taking walks on the sidewalk instead of on grass or in the woods? Examine the coat daily, remove ticks as you find them and have SNAP 4DX tests run on a regular basis.

For Chance, I continue to use heartworm at 45 day intervals. On a regular basis, he is walked around the sidewalks. If we know we will be traveling to Lake George or he might be going into woods, we do treat him at least 4-5 days prior to any exposure to ticks with Frontline. Tick disease is very serious and I don't want him to have to tackle that. He has not had any adverse reactions to any product throughout his life.

Congratulations on the Therapy Dog test! Chance is registered with Therapy Dog International and spent more than 8 years visiting the nursing home before he got sick. I am hoping that this year we will be able to get him over for some short visits. You will have fun with this!

Here is a recent comment made by a Branch Chief of the EPA about the latest review of flea a and tick products. Product Manufacturers met with the EPA on May 4th.
The comments are pretty significant mentioning the possibility of stronger precautionary statements on use labels and even the possibility of product cancellation! My pet almost died from a Frontline application and suffered with AIHA as a result. He wa treated for three years and is just now recovering after a long road and $10,000 in vet bills. You couldn't give me a million bucks to ever use one of these pesticide laden products again.

Dear :
The spot-on pesticides are undergoing increased scrutiny by EPA. As part of the intensive evaluation that the Agency is conducting, we are looking at a variety of issues. We expect to receive additional information from all registrants of pesticide spot-on products on the incidents reported. Once received, we will expeditiously and thoroughly review the additional information. We will also review the domestic animal safety data submitted or cited for all of the registered products, as well as our domestic animal safety guidelines to determine if the guidelines result in studies that accurately predict safety to pets. In addition, we have established a team of veterinarians who work in our office who will thoroughly analyze all of the information. After that analysis is complete, we will take appropriate regulatory action to address any concerns with these products. Possible actions could range from requiring label changes to include stronger precautionary statements and use directions, to encouraging voluntary cancellation of some of the products, to pursuing formal product cancellation where other agreements cannot be reached with a registrant.
