"(2) A veterinarian, with the written consent of an animal's owner, may issue a written waiver pursuant to the rules of the health department, exempting an animal from a rabies vaccination order if the veterinarian, in his or her professional opinion, determines that the rabies inoculation is contraindicated due to the animal's medical condition."

Johnny -- that is great news and thank you so much for posting. I believe that my dear beagle Wiley's last 3-year rabies shot, one month before she became ill with IMHA, had something to do with the onset of IMHA. She had hypothyroidism (diagnosed spring 2003) and Addison's Disease (diagnosed spring 2004), so it's pretty clear she had a compromised immune system. The rabies shot may have been the final thing that sent her immune system into overdrive.

Let's hope that more states see the light.

I recently asked a Vet how often they vaccinated their own pets and was told that they let years go in between (more than the law allows) I am not naming any names for obvious reasons but was glad to hear someone in the field acknowledge that it may not be good for them.

I think that is definitely a paw in the right direction. I hope someday Pennsylvania and other states pass a similar law.

Thanks for sharing this with us:)

Hi all.
How interesting. When i was corresponding with the manufacturer of the vaccine that I attribute Kents AIHA to, I was put through to their veterinary specialist. He has 3 schnauzers, like Kent was. I asked how often he vaccinated. He said every three years or less. Yet here Kent was getting vaccinated every year, because the company push their vaccines on teh vets, and the vets do it as its their bread and butter.

LOL...you don't think that the Vaccine's vet specialist would say anything different right! He's on their payroll! It's a shame really how many vets out there are more for the money than the wellbeing of the animal!

Another thing that really pisses me off is the fact that they actually have 1 year and 3 year rabies vaccines! They draw the vac outta the same vile....meaning the vaccine for the one year and three year are EXACTLY the same! Just stupid if you ask me!

You're right though....vaccines as well as flea and tick meds ARE most vets bread and butter! They stand to lose LOTS of revenue if laws change!
