Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - For Patrice re braces.Urgent.

Hi Patrice,
Could you explain about the braces please.Things are different in the UK I've only found wheels for back legs on our dog mobility site and am absolutely devastated about what's happening to Joe although we don't get any confirmation from our vet until the tests on Friday.Do you think that all of this has come about because of breed standards?I thought I'd done it right this time by buying from an accredtited Kennel Club breeder but it's still gone wrong.I am really sick with worry at this time as in six years I've had three dogs all diagnosed with life threatening illness.
Thank you for your patience and knowledge.
Best wishes,
Corrie.

Corrie,
Check out all the front leg braces on this page (scroll down closer to the bottom of the page). There are a variety of things that can be done if surgery is either not desirable or is impossible. These braces allow for good support for moderate activity in those cases.

Dogs are capable of surviving amazing injuries and limb problems with little thought. I have seen a dog that had only his two hind legs move around easily. Giving orthopedic support can be much easier in some cases with dogs than it is with humans who bring a lot of "mental baggage" to their recovery.

You may have to discuss some form of routine pain medication with a specialist. Be sure to ask here any questions about those meds too for a unscientific idea of what meds you might want to be using.

Be patient with yourself, you are doing the right things right now to sort this out.
my best

Hi Corrie
I am sorry to read that Joey is having a few issues with his legs. I just wanted to let you know that if you find out it is arthritis there are a ton of supplements out there to help. Most take about 6 weeks before you will notice a difference and some work on some dogs and not on others so it is kind of just trail and error, most are not that expensive. Ginger has arthritis and supplements have really helped her. Dr Dodds recommends Dog Gone Pain (DGP) which you can find on the Internet, fish oil is another one. If you want you can email me privately and I will give you the ones that Ginger is on. See if you can find the K9 arthritis yahoo group and join that, they were very helpful to me and Ginger. groups.yahoo.com/group/caninearthritis

Also switch to a grain free food if you have not already.
