Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - For dogs with ITP

I found this while searching for something else and thought I would pass it along. Sulfa antibiotics can trigger ITP.

"Antibiotics are often harmful to patients. Sulfa/trimethoprim (Bactrim Rx, Tribrissen Rx, Ditrim Rx, Sulfatrim Rx, SMZ-TMP, other generic names) is an antibiotic that can cause joint inflammation in Dobermans and is implicated in immune mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP) in many dog breeds."

That particular drug SMZ-TMP was why I left my last Vet. He understood I had lost one dog to AIHA because he initially diagnosed her and then he wanted to prescribe that for another of my dogs! I wish sometimes Vets would be more open to learning after they leave school or at least connect the dots.

Thanks for the link Laurie.

I've got a note right on top of Tessy's file at the vet saying "Absolutely No "SULFA" drugs" just in case we have to see a new doctor. I remember hearing this when Tessy first got sick. They are also a known trigger for AIHA. They tried a couple times to put her on these (not her regular doctor) and thank god I what the drug was. Too much of a risk.

Thanks again for the reminder.

Hi Laurie,
My Kent was prescribed sulfasalazine, i looked it up and found this warning, and refused to give it to him. His vet and i really butted heads over this, he said there was no way it could contribute to aiha, and i just stuck to my guns - after all, it was on the rx print out that you get with prescriptions. My Vet was frustrated with me, and i think many vets are unaware of this. Best is to show them if they dont know that sulfa drugs are contraindicated in dogs with AIHA from the drug info from teh manufacturer.
Just goes to show, we all reallly have to always read the fine print and be aware, and sometimes we find things our dear vets dont know yet - they are learning too through this process.
Best,
Christine
