Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - For Christine/Kent

Christine,

Loved the pics of Kent and the captions. He is adorable.

I believe, as you do, that diet and nutriton (along with much prayer) is very important to the health and recovery of our pets. I am supplementing Darcy's diet with Standard Process' protocol for rebuilding blood cells and supporting the immune system. Standard Process has a great vet on staff who will answer any questions. Darcy gets 1/2 cup of Newman's Organic dry twice a day (I feel she needs that crunch for her teeth and also to add bulk to the stool), along with some of the Newman's canned; a little plain pumpkin (high in iron and good for settling loose stool or constipation;organic carrot baby food; organic chicken breast; organic lean hamburger;a tsp or two of organic plain yogurt; organic non-sweetened apple sauce; and the occasional egg. Yes, it sounds like a lot but she isn't getting huge amounts. My dog eats as well as or better than I do. I used to give her raw carrots and broccoli, but stopped that when I discovered that she was passing them whole and they obviously weren't being absorbed in her system. I mix the supplements in with the wet foods and give her the prednisone and azapriothine wrapped in peanut butter. I always try to space everything out so there'll be no interactions. I have a detailed schedule on my kitchen counter and mark off every dose, noting the time each is given. I could never keep all of this straight without a written record!

I would be interested in learning more about Kent's diet and nutrition supplementation. I need all of the help I can get to know how to create a healthy diet for Darcy. May Kent continue to improve and grow stronger.

Hi Karen,
I received an extraordinary amount of help from a member of this board since Kent has got sick. Much of what I know i learned from her.
I will be happy to share what I know, but remember all dogs are different, too, and I am no expert.
Also, Kent has developed kidney disease, so that is our 'main' focus at the moment, along with AIHA of course.

I am afraid of using anything that is immune strengthening because we are trying to keep it from attacking his red blood cells - so i am very careful.
Kent takes milkthistle, 175 mg once a day (he is 33 pouinds) and sAme too 200mg a day. One week a month he is off his supplements.
He takes 1200 mg omega 3 fish oil, to help his kidneys and his heart, also CoQ10 50mg a day for his heart. He does not have a heart problem but gets daily subq fluids so its preventative.
He takes pet-tinic 3mg a day, and gets b complex with his fluids.
He takes prescripition ursodial to keep his bile ducts working - thats all good for the liver.
The pred did a number on his liver, so i homecooked dr. dodds liver diet for a while, then got him wellness brand white fish and sweet potato. The kidney problems make him finicky so he doesnt like that anymore, he is now eating fromms, but its not kidney friendly. I bake biscuits for him - email me for the recipe -christine.m.mitchell at g maildotcom - and i will share.
He takes calcium supplements for his overall condition. he takes dogzyme pre probiotic to keep his tummy healthy and it works - also works for me :)
Sometimes i steam his veggies but he likes them raw.
he likes most things, but in rotation. apples without the peel, carrots peeled, broccoli, cabbage (cooked) cauliflower, beans, almost everything. this week he is on a hardboiled egg kick. right now i am making him applecinnamon biscuits.
He loves pork and bacon but doesnt get more than a taste. He gets fresh fish - snapper, amberjack, whatever is caught.
He eats chicken (which gave him stomach problems for a long time but no more) and beef, a little. He gets NO organ meats, also no bones, and no raw.
Today a dog attacked him in the park and bit his ear,(came out of nowhere, i got a bit scraped up too, finally can breath again as no damage ) so he got a cube of broiled steak at home, and why iam making his biscuits.
We too have no money for much, but always try to find a way. He eats much better than me, and he will always get what he needs to have. Cooking for him is pretty inexpensive, and the vitamins i get online or 2for1 at the drug store.
Any other questions, email me and I will be glad to do my best.
Cheers,
Christine and Kent
