Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - For Brenda

Brenda,

Dr. Dodds sent some file attachments with her email to me. I can send the one about thyroiditis to you if you want to give me your email address (I understand if you don't feel comfortable doing that). If not, you can go to the Hemopet website and click on Thyroid Health Articles. I think the one entitled Canine Autoimmune Thyroid Disease is one by Dr. Dodds that you would want to read. I couldn't find the specific article she sent to me, but the information is similar.

By the way, I asked Dr. Dodds today if I should put Darcy through a bone marrow test and she just answered back that no, I should not. Guess I'll be canceling first thing in the morning.

Dear Karen -- thanks for your response. After I read your note and posted my question, I googled "autoimmune thyroiditis" and a few of Dr. Dodd's articles came in my search. After reading those few articles, I think that my sweet Wiley had autoimmune thyroiditis. She began having idiopathic seizures shortly after her third birthday -- seizures are a symptom -- and she had chronic urinary tract infections. She eventually became hypothyroid (2003), developed Addison's Disease (2004), and was struck down by IMHA in 2005.

I have meant to write Dr. Dodds about my Wiley, and I think now the way to engage is to open with the autoimmune hypothyroiditis. I don't want to take too much of her time -- because dear Wiley is gone and her skills and expertise are best used for those families fighting autoimmune diseases now. But I would like to talk to someone who can explain a few things to me. I have Wiley's complete medical files, so I have the ability to provide Dr. Dodds with information to help her understand.

It is interesting that Dr. Dodds advised you to cancel the bone marrow test. Did she think that unnecessary since Darcy's diagnosis and prognosis are pretty clear to her?

Best wishes to you and to Darcy. I am hoping and praying that you have many years left with your sweet beagle. They are the best!

Brenda,

It might make you feel better to speak with Dr. Dodds. She is so nice and knowledgeable and she always responds to my emails. I'm sure that you did all that you knew to do for Wiley, so please don't beat yourself up about it.

The thing about the bone marrow test is that I wasn't feeling comfortable about putting Darcy through that. At the same time, I was feeling like it was something I needed to do to find answers and I kept praying that it was the right thing. I decided to ask Dr. Dodds and when I received her reply "No, I would not put Darcy through a bone marrow aspiration test," I felt like I had my answer. I will be making an appointment with my regular vet tomorrow to tell her that I want a blood sample sent to Dr. Dodds for testing. I'm also going to ask that she put her on Doxycycline as an added measure.

Please let me know what you hear from Dr. Dodds.

Thank you for your good wishes and especially your prayers.
