Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Flea Treats

Hi All,
It has been a while since I have posted, but during this holiday season I wanted to send holiday greetings to all, and wish you all the best New Year. Since Kent passed away, I have adopted a little rescue mini-schnauzer, his name is Muki. He came to me via a puppy mill, a San Diego Pet store, and the local animal control. He is just two years old now, and a very sweet and loving companion. I have been concerned since Kent about anti-flea medication, and someone posted on this forum about 'flea treats'. I ran round to all the dog shops and could not find brewers yeast with vit b without garlic, at all. Some say garlic is ok for dogs in small doses, others disagree. Flea treats are brewers yeast with vit b's and no garlic. I ordered some, and have been giving muki half the recommended dose - we have been battling fleas (and we live in s. florida) since he came to me, a year and a half ago. He has no fleas now, at all. I have recently stopped giving him these treats (liver flavored) as I have not had a chance to research the amounts of b vitamins in these treats. I understand a holistic vet somewhere or other recommends this, but I am curious to know if anyone else has tried these, or has looked at the recommended dose for dogs versus what is in these treats?

The other reason i stopped them is that Muki had a bit of a 'crisis' (dog fight - he lost); and also that he has developed a skin infection (before the treats) which our vet thinks is staph and is on a drug that is a combo of prednisone and antihistamines - and i hate to be giving him pred, and on the antihistamines he sleeps - thats all. Walk, poop, eat, sleep. Overall, though, he is a very high-spirited, smart, sweet, wonderful pup, and I am glad he found his way to me.

I lost Kent just after Christmas two years ago, though he was a AIHA and IMT (Evanss Disease) survivor. He died from a tumor that developed suddenly while he was battling Kidney disease. I remember him everyday, but especially at the holidays.

I send my prayers to all of you who are battling this disease, and I hope that as many hours, days, weeks, months and years that you have together are filled with love and joy,

Christine

Christine,
Thank you for posting. I had wondered how you were doing. Thank you for saving another dear doggie. I am sorry he is having his own problems and hope that in time they resolve themselves. I have given my dogs the brewers yeast/garlic tabs in the past with no noticed problems. We now live in a flealess environment thank God! I think it is better to error on the side of caution though. Hopefully someone can offer some more insight. Just wanted to say Merry Christmas and I know how tough it is to miss your furry friends at the holidays. Kent is in your heart where he will stay until you meet again.
Keep us posted on Muki!

Hello Christine,

Gracie has a few fleas so I purchased the flea treats. I asked Dr. Dodds on the phone if I could give Gracie them but she told me no. Of course Gracie is not fully recovered and has been dealing with Pancreatitus. I thought I would share that. I think it would be fine in a healthy dog. I simply comb Gracie everyday. I might find one or two fleas.

hugs,
Gwen and Gracie
