Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - flea repellant

In my agility class the subject of fleas came up and a discussion started. One of the participants is a holistic veterinarian. I thought that her contribution would be interesting to all of you:

We have promoted the use of Vitamin B for flea and bug repellent for years. Works to some degree but is not bomb proof. Is safer and healthier then Program, Revolution or Advantage; that's for sure!
The combination of feeding raw food without any easy digestible carbs, vitamin B and topical spray of peppermint, chamomile and lavender also seems to work reasonably well!

That's what we're using now. Our holistic vet uses these: http://www.fleatreat.com/, which has several things (including Vit B), and we're doing this in addition to a home cooked diet that's also supposed to help. She also has a spray like you mention with essential oils, and told us to use it if we were going somewhere where there are a lot of dogs.

In the past when our cat had fleas, we did constant combing/washing bedding/dichotimous earth/flea-collar-in-vacuum-bag sort of thing, and it worked. Crossing fingers we just avoid the fleas altogether with the treats :)

PS: I read somewhere that mouthwash is extremely effective at repelling/killing ticks. I haven't done any research about the safety of this one yet... still reading the wonderful intracacies about which vegetables are best to feed. So complex!
