Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Finally - Movement in PCV!

Beau's PCV has finally moved to a 25! For the past month since we've been seeing the internal med specialist he's been steady at 22. I'll take no movement over a movement down -- so I am elated to get the report of a 25 today.

Interesting enough, the specialist is reducing Beau's meds rather aggressively (IMO) but it appears to be working. His hypothesis has been that the meds are leading to Beau's deterioration -- the azathioprine as well as the prednisone. Since March 17th, he's gone from 40 mg/day of pred to 20 mg/day and two weeks ago to 10 mg/day, and from 35 mg/day of azathioprine to 25 mg/day and as of today down to 25 mg/every other day.

They took blood for another CBC today to see how his liver values and WBC are compared to the horrendous results he had a month ago. Hoping for good news on that front as well.

Intuitively you believe that these medications are the cure, not the obstacle to improvement. Perhaps too much of a good thing???

Living day-by-day with this disease, and feeling good about the fact that Beau finally has a quality of life back -- so active and playful. Hoping this continues.

Congrats on the jump in the PCV!!! I know the exact feeling....was the same way when Tessy was being treated.
Have you been using anything for hte liver??? Did you get the results back yet?

Continued thoughts and prayers for Beau...can't wait to hear some more news!

In addition to the sucralfate, Beau's also on misoprostol now which will counteract some of the damage from the prednisone. I got his blood results back yesterday -- his alk phosphatase went from a near-record 11,953 to 6,221. That's probably the most remarkable extreme on the study, and while its still extremely high, its going in the right direction! I'm keeping up the milk thistle and pet-tinic to hopefully give the prescribed drugs a little push! Unfortunately his WBC is still high (but not as high as it was) so we have to figure that one out, but generally everything is trending in the right direction so I'm pleased with that. Living one day at a time like I've never lived it before!

Thanks all for your concern!

Good to hear an update on Beau! Reduced liver damage is a big plus! Slounds like things are heading in the right direction.

Continued thoughts and prayers for Beau (and you). Give him some hugs and scritches for me.

This just continues to amaze me. Beau's PCV yesterday was a 30! He hasn't been that high in MONTHS! And this was on 10 mg pred/day and 25 mg azathioprine/every other day. Doctor now is dropping the pred to 10 mg/every other day. Yes, I'm scared. But the doctor scares me with these decreases every time I'm there. As long as the improved results continue...

We go back again in 2 weeks, at which time he is going to stop the sucralfate. Beau remains on misoprostol which will fill in for the sucralfate however. He just wants this dog off these drugs in the worst way.

In the meantime, the quality of life remains phenomenol. Although at times I'm thinking Chloe (our GSD) wishes Beau didn't feel quite so good.

Thanks all!

Sharon
