Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Ernie update
| A week after his first pred reduction Ern went for a blood test today. Just had a call from the vet with his results. PCV now 48%. Red cells and platelets within normal range, white cells a little bit high but the vet doesn't think it's anything to be concerned about. He said if you looked at Ernies results today without knowing about the AIHA you might think from the white cell count that he'd got a minor infection. From a casual conversation with the vet it seems like he has quite a bit of experience treating AIHA. He's originally from South Africa and he said that back home they see loads of AIHA cases, 80% of which are triggered by blood parasites. Here in the UK he sees about 10 - 15 cases a year. 2 weeks ago I thought he seemed a bit keen to reduce the pred dosage but he hasn't pushed it since I expressed my concerns. He seems happy to let me take it at a pace I feel comfortable with, and I feel a bit better knowing that he obviously does have more experience with AIHA than a lot of UK vets. Sue |

| Sue, Interesting info about your vet. Dr. Dodds' original home is South Africa. Perhaps this connection with the tick borne diseases is what prompted her to begin her work with hemopet? Patrice |

| Sue, sounds like your little fella is doing really well :+) and good to hear you have a Vet who is experienced in treating AIHA. Trixie seems to be doing well on her reduction of Pred. I had to pick up more medication yesterday, the other tablets that help protect the stomache lineing, I was shocked at the cost! 24 tablets @ £87!!!!, thank goodness I no longer have to pay the Vet directly, it's now being done through the insurance company! xx |
