Hi everyone, I have yet another problem with Molly I believe to be linked to her immune disease. Last time I posted it was about skin issues and I am using the fish oil, I think Patrice suggested with some success in her skin. THANKS FOR the tip!!! Now I am facing yet what seems to be ANOTHER yeast infection in her ear! I have been battling these on and off since her diagnosis(one year in Dec.) They come, I flush and treat with Motomax, I think sp. They go away, they come back. One time the ears go so bad and STINKY she did not hear for a few days. I actually ran her over one morning(she went to sleep under my truck and did not hear it!) She was ok but I can not get her ear situation under control. We did our weekly rountine this morning and her ears are once again filled with LOTS of yucky brown wax. So, I flushed and got out the Motomax. She is not on any meds. I have read sometime these dogs have to go back on low doses of Pred for life due to this but I am hoping to avoid steroids. Any insights would be GREATLY appreciated. Amy

Amy, Have your vet check for mites. This brown stuff sounds like that might be the case. This would require prescription meds and isn't something that will respond to cleaning or yeast meds. I had to treat a rescue we had here a year ago for mites like this. my best patrice

Hi amy, Tiggs has suffered ear infections before, during, and after IMHA. I have to clean them several times a week, then usually every other month or so, he still gets a doozy of an ear infection, which I treat with Mometamax (I think the same med you are talking about, which kills yeast and bacteria). Tiggs ear infections are allergy related, and we feed a good quality food (California Naturals herring and sweet potato) and he gets lots of fish oils too. But the ears are one thing we always struggle with- but his coat is in good shape. I would try to keep up on the regular cleanings, it makes it a little harder for the gunk to grow. Good luck, melissa and tiggs

Charlie is having era issues also. I read that steroids can make the yeast infections worse not better. Keeping the ears dry is really important because the fungus love dampness. Charlie is a doodle and poodle breeds have lots of hair in their ear canal which also can make it harder to keep clean and dry. Charlie is going. In for his one month check off of meds on Monday I'm hoping the vet will give him meds for his ears.

I have a dog with recurrent ear infections and I suspect yeast infection. His ears also get a brown waxy discharge and smell terrible. I purchased Zymox, which Patrice recommended in a different thread. I used Zymox Otic with Hydrocortisone until the problem cleared up, and then began using Zymox ear cleanser. These products have worked wonders !! My dog's ears no longer smell, he is no longer scratching at them, and the brown waxy discharge is gone. The insides of his ears had began to turn black and crusty, but they are now pink and the skin is normal appearing. I also purchased Zymox shampoo, and have been bathing him with it because he has oily skin/hair. Amazon.com has good prices for the Zymox products. Patrice - Thank you for recommending Zymox ! Sue

Sue, I am so glad this stuff worked for you! You can thank my vets who are country vets, but seem to be on the cutting edge for new treatments! (I think I personally financed their new digital x-ray machine....) No kidding, I liked this stuff right from the get-go because it says right on the bottle that it can be applied to "dirty ears." I found that the rubbing (and the irritation of cleaning agents) involved in cleaning ears seemed to be irritating an already inflamed ear. Resolving the irritation and then getting the ears cleaned was the best part about resolving these ear problems. my best patrice
