My 1 year old shih tzu keeps getting ear infections. I took him to the vet and they prescribed an medicine (antibiotic) for me to drop into his ears. I have used it faithfully as prescribed and I still can not get hid of it. There is always dry blood that I have to clean out of his ears. I can not afford another vet visit do to unemployment. Does anyone out there have any suggestions on how I should treat it. I have tried vinegar and water but with no success. Thank you for your feedback. Go Steelers, Kathy

"Blue Power Ear Formula" This stuff works wonders!!! I've got cockers and have dealt with ear issues quite a bit lately! I've found this stuff works much better than anything from the vets and is a fraction the cost!!! Here's what you will need for supplies... -16 oz. bottle isopropyl alcohol (standard 70%) -4 tablespoons boric acid...(use human boric acid) -17 drops gentian violet (1 or 2%)...1% works best -medicine dropper (to use to measure the gentian violet) Next add the boric acid and gentian violet to the alcohol...put right in the alcohol bottle...might wanna take a capfull or so out so it all fits. SHAKE REALLY WELL. You'll want to take some of this mixture and transfer it to a squirt bottle. (something that you can use to place the mixed drops in the ears). The boric acid doesn't dissolves until it hits the skin so you have to shake it frequently. The boric acid will sooth the ears and the gentian violet is a bacteriacide and antifungal agent that works really great. Gentian violet is the stuff they give human babies when they have an oral yeast infection (thrush) so yeah...totally safe to use. If the ear looks at all inflamed use this stuff twice a day for at least a week and then switch to once daily for another week. Just squirt it in the ear and massage well. This stuff will save people tonnes compared with the store stuff or the vet stuff (OTC stuff) and it's much better. Only one bad thing about it.... THIS BLUE POWER MIXTURE WILL STAIN!!! Might be best to use outside! Once the dogs are done shaking their heads pat dry the inside if you'ld like so they don't rub or drip it over things. This mixture is also said to be much safer for your dog than the purple/blue stuff the vets sell! Some might find it hard to find the ingrediants so it might be best to call around first. Good luck, Johnny & Tessy

Johnny, you are fountain of knowledge! I was interested in Kathy's post because Millie's canine sibling Harry has recurring yeast infections. We are constantly at the vet getting very expensive ear drops - using a product called Ottomax - and its getting too much. I am going to try this remedy on Harry. I will just have to rustle up the ingredients! Thanks from Sam and Harry!

Johnny, You must be very cautious in administering this mixture. If there is a ruptured ear drum this can cause deafness and loss of equilibrium. There can be severe conditions that will not respond to this either. Always run stuff like this by your vet for their take on it. my best patrice

| Thanks Patrice! I should have mentioned that the best thing to do is always go to the vets to have them check things out. I only use this for infections and or yeast problems....after a vet consult. I figured her dog had just infections as she noted above. Should be noted that it can be unpleasant for a dog if there's any abrasions or cuts inside the ear also! I never knew about the ruptured ear drum/deafness and equilibrium issues with this. Thanks With regards to asking the vets about using this....I have yet to hear of even one vet that'll recommend the usage of this. Perhaps cause they are unaware of it and how it works or perhaps they fear they'll lose money. I took Charlie in to have his ear checked out a few months ago and they wanted to give me drops to give. Reluctantly I agreed (and 45 bucks later). I used these for almost 3 weeks with little to no results. I decided to use this stuff and within days the ear was perfect!!! I've used it on Tessy, Willow and Daisy also for infections AFTER taking them to the vet to confirm diagnosis. I told them I thought I had drops left home from a previous case and instead used the blue power formula. Each time it worked! AGAIN THOUGH...like Patrice said...ALWAYS consult with a vet!
