Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Dunes update 2/11/08

Hi Folks-

Had Dunes down to Columbus this morning. Took her to the vet on Saturday and she still had a count of 30. The specialist in Columbus wants to raise the pred from 10 to 80 per day again and up the immuran to 75mg from 50 for the next 5 days and then every other day.

He wants to be aggressive to catch any slide-which she has been at 30 for three weeks - so it is a SLOW slide..

I hate the pred but it is better than 300 mg of atopica which will be way too expensive-Dunes already has her own charge card with way over $8,000.00 charged.

Worried about her alone at home on 80 mg of pred but will just have to see what happenens. He said if she responds that he would reduce it slowly after 3 weeks.

A little concerned. Also- he told me what Dr. Dodds suggested also-thinks the pred has affected her thyroid and she is fatter in certain areas and her skin is flaking. Getting a CBC and thyroid tests on 2/18.

Whoa! Your vet wants to give Dunes seven times his current dosage?? How much does Dunes weigh? Jan

I know that Dr. Dodds does believe the thyroid and related problems is often overlooked in dogs so I understand the test for it but it might not hurt to email her and have her explain the huge increase of the Pred. Maybe Josh will check in I know Dr. Dodds was helping him with Sway and I think she has hovered in the 20's for months and I don't remember him mentioning a recommendation of increasing the Pred.
Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Like Jan said WOW! That is a big increase in the prednisone! I had contacted Dr Dodds also about our Holly and that was one of the first things she asked me if we had a Thyroid Test done, which we did last year, just before she was diagnosed. Hers was okay at that time. Did you have her on higher Imuran before, because we have never changed Holly's dosage of Imuran from the start?

I think we are up over 10,000 with Holly, I have not added up the bills in a while, a little scared to.

When Holly had her little set back two weeks ago, they talked about starting her back on cyclosporin and of course I hated the thought because of the expense. Last time it cost $90 a month, this time would be $190 a month because different dosage. So we are waiting to hear the results of her blood work from today, should have tomorrow, before we make that decision.

Good luck with Dunes.

Dunes has gained 15 lbs since her diagnosis in June 07.
The pred was prescribed to due my reluctance to double the Atopica. Am a bit worried!
