Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Dunes is Remarkable-have hope

Before I start-has anyone heard from Josh & Sway?

Dunes was diagnosed in June 2007. I was traumatized and she had a rough go at it. When diagnosed, her PCV was 15. She was placed on 80 mg. of pred and by the end of the week, I rushed her to Columbus for emergency services. Her PCV was 6. I cried for weeks and weeks. She had two blood transfusions that first week and went home with a PCV of 16 (I think). Within a week she was back and had to have another transfusion. The Vet told me that this dog was a fighter and that she wanted to live.

She came home with 80 mg. of prednisone
20 mg. pepcid-2 x daily
1/2 low dose aspirin- 2 x daily
atopica-150 mg 2 x daily (the generic did not work at all)
Imurran

After many ups and downs, she is now, in September of 2008, at a 42 PCV. She is currently taking 10 mg of pred, 1 and 1/2 tablet of Imurran, EOD, 50 mg. of atopica.
She remains on 20 mg of pepcid twice daily and 1/2 low does aspirin, 2 x daily.

In addition, I give her to 2 multi-vitamins a day and 2 tablespoons of Pet Tinic.

She is heavier than before but jogs into the house, is still my shadow and is the most devoted creature in the world. I've spent-or should say charged over $10,000.00.
But she is alive, chews on her bone and takes walks. She follows me upstairs and downstairs.

I know there could be a relapse, but I think she will continue to progress.

Those of you just starting out with this should understand that this takes vigilance, awareness at all times, patience, and a lot of love.

I haven't been here for a while but I do remember the support and the caring that I received along with reassurance.

Maybe Dunes' story can give some folks hope.

God Bless!
