| This site has been an overwhelming source of information that has helped comfort me, which, in turn, has helped comfort my wife, during the last 5 months and I'd like to just say THANK YOU to all of you who have posted your experiences with this dreaded disease. Has anyone else noticed that there dog has developed dry skin, just like dandruff, after begin diagnosed and having been on Pred for several months? Our Peke, Bella, was diagnosed 9-28-08 and I've noticed recently, after we've cut her at home, she has a lot of skin flaking on her sides and just to her ribs. It's localized to these areas. She doesn't scratch at the areas on her sides, so it doesn't seem to bother her, but it's worrisome to me that this could be yet another side of the long term dosage of Pred. I'm wondering what types of shampoo(s) would be recommended to use to help control the dry skin? I'm afraid to try much on her for fear of a relapse.. :( Right now, we use Johnson's Baby Shampoo. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! | Hi Jason, My dog Tipsi who is a minature dachshund was diagnosed with this dreadful disease on 9/21/07. So Tipsi and Bella have been fighting for about the same amount of time, and I am having the same problem with the dry skin. Tipsi had to have many areas of fur shaved because of the IV's, ultra sounds, and etc. And now almost 6 months later she is still without any new fur and has very scaly dry skin on her hind legs and around her abdomen. Her doctors have told us that this is definately a side-effect of her prednisone. Fortunately Tipsi is under treatment at the NC State Veterinary teaching hospital so she has access to all of the other departments there and we were able to have a consultation with one of the dermatologists who suggested we use and oatmeal shampoo for her and then they also prescribed us a soothing and moisturizing spray to use 2-3 times a week. Both the shampoo and spray have helped out a lot. You may want to see if your vet could prescribe you a soothing spray for Bella. It's helped Tipsi quite a bit. However, she does try to lick it off when we spray her. But then again, my dog would eat anything right now becuase of the prednisone. :) Hope this helps. Layla & Tipsi |

| Choe has been an AIHA patient since 9/06 and on pred since that time. He is finally holding with his pcv level (45) and I am thrilled, but his skin is very dry. I purchased a product called Grizzly salmon oil at a homeopthic vet's office (with Omega 3 fatty acids) made by Grizle Pet products. www.grizzypetproducts.com Seems to be helping a bit. Jan |
