Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Don't ever feel sorry for a 3 legged dog!

This new thread is for Johnny, Sadie and Tessy. Anyone else who might want to read this, fine with me//...

Johnny, I know you are suffering a horrible loss BUT you did tell me you enjoyed my stories so this thread is just for you and your babies. I'll opt out when anyone tells me to do so. SOOOOOOOO.....

Ever seen a 3 legged dog chase down a tennis ball? Ever see a 3 legged dog drag it's owner down the street? Ever seen a 3 legged dog run up and down back deck stairs? Well, Miss Molly, after only 4 days, is proving herself to be quite a challenge, LOL.

Tuesday night, I was sitting in the living room, she was loose, out of her cage. I wondered how she would handle trying to get up on the couch. She jumped up with her two front feet and took her back right leg and crawled up on the couch. Quite pleased with herself, she looked at me as if to say, "Bring it on!". I never said or did anything, letting her settle herself into the couch. (God love him, Jack used to do the same thing.,) The next night, she owned the couch! LOL

Since she is a puppy she needs lots of exercise, another challenge for me. But I figured out, she is just as happy with me throwing a tennis ball in the back yard and a chew toy in the living room.

She can be so darn sweet, so docile, so calm, THEN, let another dog bark and she turns into a Rottwiler. I hate a barking dog, can't stand it, cause most of them do it non-stop 24/7. I'm working with her to let her know that is totally unacceptable behavior. However, I am secretly pleased that I have a dog with a bark that says, "I'll rip your throat out and make you wish you had three times the health insurance you now have!" "Come to my front door and let's see what I can do with those "baggie pants".

Molly has the body of a yellow lab, the ears of a great dane, the face markings of a husky and the horrible wide grin of a pit bull. Ummmm I've always been afraid of pit bulls.

Tonight when I took Molly out to the back yard to play and let her get her "wiggles" out, she actually took that damn tennis ball and threw it up in the air and caught it.

Guess I've bored all of you wonderful guys enough,/

Bye, Mary & Molly (and Jack)

Mary, sounds like Molly is fitting in just nice with you! Kudos again for taking Molly when she really needed someone.
Keep the stories coming. I always wondered why we never told more stories here of our pups. Gotta ALWAYS remember what they're here for right!

Today, a week ago Jack passed away. I was so distraught from the time he went into the vet's until that Sunday he passed. Honestly, I could not stop crying.

Got a sympathy card yesterday from the vet's office. It was so touching, about 8 folks wrote a little note about how sorry they were that Jack died, etc. I was very touched.

In the meantime, I have Molly, who doesn't realize she only has one back leg, LOL. She went up and down the stairs in the house from the first floor to the second, where my bedroom is. (Also, where Jack spent a lot of time in the bathroom on the cold tile floor right under the air conditioner vent.)

Yesterday, while I was getting my make up on, she came and laid down on my foot and just stayed there. So touching. She is proving herself to be one hell ova dog and she hasnt' even lived here a full week yet, which will be tomorrow.

She already knows sit, lie down, NO, go teetee (she squats right down and does her business), etc. She loves to walk each evening. We have greeted neighbors and their dogs and she has exhibited no aggression at all. Thank God!

She is turning out to be a very good dog for me. I met up with one of the neighbors last night and he said, "Mary, why did you get this dog?" Well, for one thing, all I want is a healthy dog who will walk a mile with me each night. I also want a well mannered, disciplined dog. I also want a dog who will be my constant companion. The fact that I'll be sitting down and she will come up and lay her head on my foot means so much to me! She seems to want to be "touching" me, in her own little way, which pleases me to no end.

I told the neighbor, I could care less if she is a real Heinz 57, not particularly good looking (Jack WAS beautiful, got told that time and time again) and only has 3 legs. It works for me and seems to work for her, LOL. Honestly, she only had a little issue with the stairs, but you should see her now go lickety split up and down with no problems, and she does love to play ball.

She has helped me tremendously get over the loss of Jack. I notice a few similarities, guess cause they are dogs, right? But they please me.

A couple of interesting notes - Molly LOVES to watch TV! No kidding, she is so engrossed when the TV is on. And she doesn't like to get her feet wet. Yesterday it was raining like crazy and I thought, Oh Dear, here we go, she's gotta go out and do her thing. She skirted all around where the grass was the shortest and did her business and ran hurriedly back up the stairs. Guess she won't be a water dog or swimmer! Funny how they all have their little quirks............

Mary,
I am glad that you got Molly. It sounds like it was meant to be.

One week ago today, I got Molly. And Boy, let me tell you...she has proven to be a really wonderful dog. As well as a challenge! (Don't we all feel that way about our "beloveds".) She is coming out of her shell and becoming much more confident.

She really is a little damn scamp! She looks at you with those beautiful chocolate brown eyes (so much like my dear Jack), but she is very, very tricky....looks so damn innocent but I can see her little mind working, working. What to chew up next and what to get into next, so that "Mom" doesn't know, LOL.

Tonight, we were in the back yard and the neighbor just next door, chain link fence between our properties, brought out his boxer, Dillon. Well, let me tell you, I haven't seen Dillon in about a month, and Man, that dog has filled out. Has the body of a muscle man! Huge and ominious looking. I was curious to see what Molly would do, even though there was a fence between them.

She just nosed him and started running up and down the fence line, with Dillon right on her tail! LOL, the guy said, I can't believe that 3 legged dog is running that fast. Molly was very polite, didn't growl, bark or appear aggressive. Thank God!

She just ran and ran and ran and then ran all over the back yard. I think she might be good in agility! LOL. Of course, she needs to be better trained - "my bad" although I am working on it. There is a lady here who does agility training but before she accepts dogs, they must have "basic" manners, which is what we are working on.

I am impressed with her because she does appear to be quite bright. Or perhaps, Jack was just not all that smart, LOL. But he was the sweetest dog to ever cross the Pike. I have heard smart dogs get into trouble because they are not mentally challenged enough and can become disruptive. So far so good. But she has impressed me - not that I'm gonna tell her. She is becoming quite satisfied with herself! LOL.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for sharing your stories about your new girl Molly.
Sounds like you were both meant for each other, and she's helping you through your loss of Jack - certainly providing you with a lot of entertainment!
Dogs (and animals in general) are amazing in that they just adapt to the hand they are dealt. They get on with the business of enjoying life, despite being handicapped or disabled in some way.

They never cease to amaze me - humans can learn so much from a dog's attitude to life.

We wish you many happy days with darling Molly.

Sam & Millie.

Molly is a little SCAMP! She has way lots more energy than Jack did, course he was a VERY laid back Golden soul, and she is much more curious than he was. Totally different dog. Thank goodness, I had Jack to learn on cause this little gal is definitely a challenge. A little too smart, I'm thinking......challenging an old woman like me!

She loves ice! I drink alot of iced tea and water and when I get ice out of the ice maker, she just sits and waits....she loves to take it to her crate and chomp on it. She also like to chase bugs. The outside deck light brings all the bugs out and she patiently watches for her chance to "get one". LOL LOVES chasing tennis balls, thinking about agility if me, the owner, can train her....she has a lot more energy than I have, LOL.

We've walked around the neighborhood some, actually, each night but I pace her because she looks back at me sometimes during the walk and I can tell she's getting tired, but won't admit it or give up. So, we turn around and go back home. She always sleeps well after a good walk.

Such a sweetie and a savior for me. BUT, when I let myself, I get very sad and weepy about Jack..........funny thing, an old girlfriend from college called me just tonight. She has been keeping up with me and Molly and Jack on Facebook so she knows what has transpired...

She called and said, "You won't believe this!" I went to my hairdressers today and another friend showed up who just lost her big Schnauzer (SP?)., so while she was at the vets saying goodbye to her dog, she noticed a dog in a crate that was missing it's front leg. It was a 3 legged dog named MOLLY....... My friend said to me, "this is so unreal, like an out of body experience....she got a 3 legged dog named Molly and you got a 3 legged dog named Molly...how freaking wild is that?" My friend showed HER friend my pics that I had posted on FB and they both were just stymied about the similarities,,,,,,,,,,,a miracle, coincidence, our Lord working His way on earth???????
