Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Dog Food

Please advise re: dog food choice.

Pre-IMHA, Layla happily ate "Nutro-Max" Lamb & rice, strictly dry & had, small healthy stools.
Now, after treating her to a Tlb. of soft "Beneful" mixed in w/dry "Natures Recipe" (gradually switched over to a few diff. foods. as she became so picky after Pred. reduction) she is snubbing this even w/ some real people goodies mixed in!

Kind of worried as she used to love this medley.

I’m wondering about the “Raw Diet” I realize there is some amt. of bacteria in there, but heard the amt. really isn’t much diff. than your average dry food. My friend swears by it & says it saved her dog’s life.

Info. appreciated.

Also, has anyone heard of Dr. Pitcarin’s book of natural healing for Dogs? If so, is it a good resource?

Thanks,
T. & Layla

Terese,

When my dog became real picky about food Dr. Dodds recommended several foods one of which was Eagle Pack Holistic Select. It comes in cans and dry at the pet food store. My dogs and cats love it! I mix a little canned with dry and they have been happily eating it now for 7 or 8 months. (Their favorite seems to be the canned duck, but its followed closely by the chicken or the lamb) - They like them all :)
Just wanted to share that with you - good luck!

Chris
P.S Haven't heard of the book.

Hi Terese,

We've had luck with California Naturals Herring and Sweet Potato (great for the coat too!), and have had luck with dehydrated raw, I like the Honest Kitchen. You add water, and let it sit, then you can mix it with the kibble. I prefer this over a giant raw leg, gross!

You can also home cook, we did that for several months when Tiggy was much sicker. Boiled chicken, sweet potatoes, steamed fish, fresh veggies, etc. He was eating better than me!

In some cases it can be cheaper to feed a dog home cooked meals. I have quite a few dogs to take care of and I switched a couple years back from store bought food to people food (cooked). To my surprise it saved me quite a bit of money in the long run. You just have to keep an eye open for specials and have room in your freezer. My dogs love the people food! It's like a crying frenzy at meal time now for them. They love it, it's healthy for them, and it's cheap! Just got to make sure you get the right mixes so as to get all the needed nutrients.

Hope all is well.
