Sadly Dexter went down hill rapidly, over the weekend and was not geed news when he had is bloods tested this morning. Whilst good evidence was shown of new red blood cells being produced those hateful white ones were still winning. The decision was made to have the op to remove his spleen, he made it throught the op, however did not really become fully awake and died quite peacefully an hour later. I think it was his way of saying I have had enough of this. I am writng this with a very heavy heart and many tears, but he was not a young dog nearly 11, had enjoyed life to the full and it was breaking my heart seeing that all taken away from him in a flash, with this ghastly disease. For those of you still going through it all I know how hard it is and I send love to you all. Heartfelt thanks for all the kind messages and outstanding advice that has been given in helping us to understand AIHA. Keep up the good work.....

Bev, I'm so sorry to hear Dexter didn't make it. It truly is a horrible disease; we lost our 19 month old Lab to it right after Christmas. It sounds like you did everything you could for him, but you're right - I think they let us know. He's happy and healthy again where he is now, not that that helps much, I know. Feel free to email me if you need someone to talk to. I'll be thinking of you. Elizabeth

Dear Bev, I am so saddened to hear about Dexter. I wish things had turned out differently for you. You gave him a wonderful 11 good years with your family and that is a special gift not only for you but for him as well. People who own dogs and make them part of their family are very special in all areas of their life. The joy Dexter brought to you will grow to encompass all who know you. Please accept my sympathy, Patrice

Bev, I am so sorry that Dexter lost his battle. Sometimes no matter how hard you try it is just not to be. You gave him every chance and I hope in the coming days you can remember him as he was prior to the awfulness of this period of time. He is at the bridge meeting a whole lot of dogs that like him could not beat this terrible disease. They are now all healthy and probably have taken him on a fine romp across a field. Penny

Bev, This is so sad. You and I sounded like we had similar storied - a little older dog, pcv looking like they were getting better, and the WBC doing weird things. I lost mine a little over a week ago. It's so hard. I think the hardest part is the way you put it - here was a healthy vibrant dog and the next thing you knew, they were going down. The poor things have no clue what happened. My girl just hated going to the vet. She would put the brakes on and I would practically have to pick her up (no easy task as she was 80 lbs.)and carry her in. I hate that memory. Please take care and know that there are many of us thinking of you at this time. Gail

Bev- I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. It's the tragedies such as this that make it hard for me to visit this site on a regular basis. Dexter no longer is in the grips of this horrid disease and take solace in the fact that you did all you could to make him well.
