Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Dermatology issues and staph

Patrice in response to your question about how to treat the cysts/lesions, long term antibiotics are the best way to keep this problem under control. The vet at CSU has called in another prescription for two more weeks. Lindy's internal specialist said it is better to keep AIHA dogs on antibiotics long term than stopping and starting again.
If staph infections are moving from humans to dogs, this isn't a good thing! I was originally worried that Lindy might have a staph infection, but Dr. Bayliss assured me that wasn't what she had.
Keep posting those sites, Patrice!
It never ceases to amaze me how much knowledge there is on this forum.
Thanks to everyone.

Hi Nancy,
Yes, we had Chance on antibiotics from day one for many many months. The specialist advised us to do this because he was not making any white blood cells. He was virually unable to fight off any infections on his own. Staph is certainly awful, but what we were really worried about were the kind of opportunistic infections that happen to humans or dogs when they have no immune system function (think bubble boy). Specialist told us to monitor his temperature every 4 hours and if it went over 103 degrees to bring him to the vets immediately for intravenous antibiotics.

Here are a couple of web sites with information about MRSA. The first one is titled MRSA and Cats, but it does apply to dogs too:

Report on the first known transmission of MRSA from human to dog:

Staph and this specific type of staph are NOT usually a problem in normal people or dogs or cats. Please don't be alarmed by staph, but do wash your hands carefully before and after touching your AIHA dog. Cephalosporin is the best treatment for the general cases of staph.
