Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Darcy

Please pray for Darcy. While she is still eating, for which I am extremely thankful, her appetite isn't nearly as great as it has been and her gums and tongue are very pale. She lays around most of the time, but when I came home yesterday she greeted me with a bark and a wagging tail. She's still taking her meds and supplements, but sometimes needs a little coaxing. My sweet girl comes to my bed around 5:30 or 6:00 every morning to tell me it's time to take her out and fix her breakfast. She used to sleep in bed with me, but quit doing that three or four nights ago. She doesn't appear to be suffering, even though her breathing is a little labored or wheezy at times. It's been a month since the vet was here, so I might have her come by next week to give Darcy a B12 shot. We've been fighting this non-regenerative anemia for almost eight months and we're still hanging in there.

Karen,
Please know that you are Darcy are in my thoughts and prayers... just continue to love her and cherish each moment you have with her...

Karen,
We are keeping you and Darcy in our prayers that she can stay strong enough to overcome this. All you can do is take it one day at a time. Last year we did not think we would ever see a light at the end of the tunnel, two years later and I can actually see the light.

Hi Karen I can really relate to you as I have been through a very similar situation with Scruffy with a very slowly dropping PCV but with little regeneration and in my case almost no regeneration of RBC's. In fact it was officially less than 0.01 regeneration. In fact he was very ill about 5 weeks after his blood transfusion.

Keep a close watch on her PCV if her gums get stalk white it will mean a very low PCV. With Scruffy he got an infection and also his liver enlarged due to the drugs. He was a very sick little dog and needed a further blood transfusion to give him any chance. I was convinced by the vets not to go on. I will always regret that I was unable to keep going with a futher transfusion and had him put to sleep and now must always wonder that just maybe he had some chance.
I sincerely hope that Dardy has the strength to recover with all your love and devotion you give her.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and continued prayer. Darcy isn't feeling too well today and isn't eating all of her food. That's so unlike her. She gave me a weak greeting when I came home from church. She's still going out to potty, although I do carry her out but she walks back in on her own. I've emailed the vet and asked her to come by and give Darcy a B12 injection. I'm doing all I know to do that is in her best interest. I just love my little girl so much, as the rest of you love your babies, and I want her to feel good again. I know that her PCV is extremely low, because her gums and tongue are still pale. I have chosen not to put her through a fifth transfusion and want to avoid her having to have a clinical experience if at all possible. She gets so upset and nervous whenever I carry her to the vet and she doesn't have enough energy to go through that. I want her at home where she feels safe and comfortable. I'm praying for a miracle.

Karen, I know exactly where you are coming from regarding the 5th transfusion. The main reason I wished to highlight the low PCV was Scruffys PCV got to 8 and the vets informed me that if it dropped any further it would affect all his organs because of the lack of oxygen they must have to function and they would fail. All I am saying is if you don't do another transfusion please watch her very carefully and that maybe you should consider having a PCV test done so you know exactly where she is at and I agree that whilst she is able to eat and get around like Scruffy was able to it is worth hanging on as long as you possibly can. I am praying for you and Darcy and that she can pull through this and you get a miracle turnaround. This is the most heartwrenching condition and I understand everything you are going through as I have been there too.
