After 7 months of the anguish that all of us go through with this disease, we were starting to see some improvement in Daisy as we slowly lowered her Prednisone. Last night after midnight, she started vomiting and continued it for several hours. This morning she would not eat or drink water, and I had to work to get her to take her Imuran and Prednisone. At noon, she collapsed so I took her to the ER Vet by us and they had to take her in on a guerney. Ultrasound and X-rays showed she has swallowed a sock or baby burp cloth! She has to have it removed later today when they can call in a surgeon. I am worried because of her poor wound healing from all the immunosuppressants she has in her system. Has anyones dog undergone surgery? How did they do? The only good news is her PCV has increased from 29 a month ago to 40 today when they spun it. Some of the improvement may be from dehydration, but at least she is better. I think if her PCV would have been the same or lower I wouldn't consider putting her thru the operation at let her cross the bridge.... Keep her in your prayers.

9:15 Just got back from the ER. They found two black socks and a perforated ulcer. Daisy is still sedated but they have a good prognosis for her. They removed the socks and resected the ulcer. I was suprised she had the ulcer because I was aware from the beginning of the danger associated with steroids and probability of stomach problems. She has been on Pepcid AC twice a day since this started in July. Everyone may want to consider adding sulfacrate or similar in addition to the Pepcid AC.

Perhaps it is a good think she ate to the socks or the ulcer could have gone undected til it wa to late.! prayers for you Daisy that all heals well and she will be bouncing around soon.

Great to hear that Daisy is through the surgery and has a good prognosis for recovery. I've noticed that some dogs on this site are only on Pepcid and have wondered if that was enough. Duck has taken both pepcid and sucralfate from the beginning. The pharmacist explained to me that sucralfate acts to keep the mucous lining of the gastro intestinal tract healthy and it is the mucous membrane that protects. Anyway Ron, great news for you. I guess now you'll have to make sure you don't leave any socks lieing around!!! It's amazing what they'll eat isn't it? deb and Duck

Things are looking bad...Daisy's surgery took a real toll on her body. Between the perforated ulcer and the trauma of the operation she is doing poorly. Her albumin levels are very low and she won't eat. She has been given several bags od plasma in hopes of raising her protein levels, but her poor liver is "trashed" from the prednisone. The surgeon noted the looks of her liver in his report. If she has nor shown any signs of being able to restore her own protein/albumin levels then I am going to have to make a hard decision tomorrow.
