Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Cyclosporine side effects?
| Today is Penny's fourth day on cyclosporine. She had been on imuran and prednisone plus antibiotics, but the PCV wasn't coming up past 27 after 2 weeks, so the vet added 150mg of cyclosporine. Today Penny is kind of depressed, and she's having increased trouble holding urine. We are going to the vet first thing Friday morning, but I'm wondering what side effects you all have noticed from this drug. Thanks, Christine |

| Christine, my Shadow (a 20-lb terrier mix) was diagnosed the day before Penny. Like Penny, Shadow was hospitalized and put on IV drips. She had a transfusion of oxyglobin, after which her pcv plummeted. Then she had a transfusion of greyhound blood that pumped her pcv up to 23.5 Because her pcv didn't improve, and actually started falling, the doctor supplemented her prednisone and imuran with 200 mg of cyclosporine. Shadow reacted as Penny did - with depression and extreme lethargy (Shadow didn't have a problem holding her urine, but I have two pet doors, so she has access to the yard 24/7.) The doctor backed her down to 100 mg of cyclosporine, then gradually increased it back up to 200 mg. Shadow seems better able to handle the high dose of cyclosporine after having been gradually introduced to it . . . but each dog is different and responds differently to the aiha cocktail. | Chance was at high of 225mg atopica for quite a while. After I would give him his dose, he would seem almost "stunned." I chatted with our vet who also prescribes this for dermatitis and she reports similar responses from many dogs that are on this drug. As we lowered the dose, Chance was less bothered by the atopica. The most frequently reported side effects of cyclosporine are digestive upset and diarrhea. This drug acts in a different way to suppress the immune system so the side effects are different than those with prednisone. (and thus a preferable choice to move to when lowering the pred dosage) patrice |
