Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Cyclosporin Forever

I just got off the phone with the vet we needed a refill on the cyclosporin and she said that he would be on it forever. I guess with everything I thought that eventually they would reduce. His current dosage is a 5% solution .2ml twice a day. He weighs about 7 pds he has gained some weight from the pred. which they are reducing. Is everyone else on cyclosporin forever?

Hi Teresa. Duck is almost off the prednisone. Once he goes off, we will wait a month and if PCV's hold at normal, we will stop the cyclosporine. But at that point, Duck will still be on the azathioprine every other day and may well end up being on it for the rest of his life. We will have to decide whether or not to take him off the aza and risk a relapse at some point in the future. I think there are other dogs in the "Success Stories" who ended up on a maintenance dosage of one medication or other for their entire lives so it isn't uncommon.

Hope this helps.

Teresa,

How can the vet say he will have to be on cyclosporin forever?? I don't understand that. I do realize if the numbers drop then need to go back up on the prednisone, again we stopped Holly's cyclosporin cold turkey and now she is on Imuran. We are at final decrease of the prednisone to 2.5 mg EOD until the end of month. If her numbers hold good, then will start decrease on Imuran.

I would think they would need to wait and see how Cranky's numbers do with the prednisone decrease. Holly's Dr in Atlanta did tell us in the beginning some dogs remain on drugs (prednisone) for their life, but she said would depend on how her numbers went.

Teresa,
My dog Spencer is on the brand name Neoral 100mg daily which is the same thing. He has had AIHA since March 2005. He is also still on the aziothioprine 2X weekly 75mg. He has been weaned off the pred for almost a year now. My vet doesn't want to mess with any of the meds because he is doing so well and the CBC is completely normal. Unfortunately neoral is much more expensive but it looks like he'll be on that until further notice.
