Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - cyclophosmide/pred/imuran/ all of the above?

I just posted the history of my dog Ollies (lab 90 lbs pre IMHA, 104 lbs post pred) IMHA, and have been reading this website all afternoon after finding it today, and suddenly I feel like I'm not doing enough. 80mg of pred for 2 weeks, cyclophos. for 1 round (4 days), no response. Should I give these some time (hes having some side effects on pred) or demand that we start some imuran, cyclosporine or something. I just feel so desperate and that each day that passes is one in which maybe another med would work. I know that it's trial and error, and that you cant give all at once. Its just so FRUSTRUATING.

Having been through this ordeal and am still going through it with my 2 year old golden retriever, we found that Cooper responded quite quickly when Imuran was added. We do believe it saved his life. We are in the fifth week of this horrible disease, and in two days we start to wean Cooper off of the prednisone. He is now on 40 mg. prednisone twice a day, Imuran 50 mg. once a day, Doxycycline 300 mg. for 21 days, and famotidine 10 mg. 1 1/2 hrs before the prednisone. It isn't an easy disease to treat, believe me, but I believe more and more that most dogs if diagnosed quickly can survive. Please email me if you have any other questions. And good luck!

MJ,

Take a breath. You are getting yourself informed about this disease and you are trying to make the best decisions for your dog. Imuran usually takes 3-4 wks to be truly effective. (Patrice could confirm this.) I noticed another post where Cooper had a very quick result - a blessing, but it may have been a combination of factors leading to his improvement.

Unfortunately, this is not an easy disease. You noted your worries about expenses - that is a reality. Only you and your family know what you can realistically spend. Treatments can go into many thousands especially if specialists, testing and powerful meds are required (not even mentioning emer. care, if needed). My heart goes out to you - it is very stressful. Please know that everyone on this site is behind you and praying for your dog.

Thanks for your responses! What a great site, I know I just need to take a breather, ahhh. I would love to try the cyclosporine instead of the cyclophosphamade that he's on now, he still has 2 weeks of that treatment left, I'm trying to get answers on that today. I just wish that I would have known more last week at the appointment so I could have asked the question "why cyclophosphomide instead of cyclospornie?" Instead of trying to get in touch over the phone. I know, breathe..... I'm trying
Can anyone tell me a dollar figure for Imuran (cyclosporine) I hear its expensive, but I'm wondering ball park figure?

MJ,

I believe Imuran is Azathiaprine, not Cyclosporine...we are on this, so I'm pretty sure that's it. Imuran/Aza isn't that expensive at all.

Cyclo is a.k.a. Neoral, Atopica, and a few other names. Others will be able to tell you the cost on that. I believe that is very expensive, though many here have had luck getting it at Walmart, Costco, and other cheaper sources.

Good luck! Hope to meet you out here soon.
