Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Coombs test question

Hi all,

I am an old timer on this forum. My boy Jacob (now at the Bridge) was diagnosed back in July 2002 and was the Oct. 2003 success story. Even when he went to the Bridge in Jan. 2008 he was still in remission. :) I have a quick question, with the coombs test......I believe there can be a false negative but not a false positive. Is this correct? It has been a long time for me. I am helping a nice foster mama named Lauren. A rescue group saved a boy named Phoenix from a high kill shelter in NYC. They knew he was used as a bait dog (he is a bully breed). Poor boy even had his teeth filed down to nothing and some were actually just gone. :( Anyway, they knew he was in poor shape and now find out he has IMHA. Ugh! THis sweet guy cannot catch a break.

Teresa, so sorry Phoenix has to fight IMHA, but with prayers and your help, perhaps his "break" is coming!

Tori is overcoming this IMHA and is in remission, but still on a very low dose of Pred every 5 days.

My prayers are with you and Phoenix!!!!

Blessings,
Cindi & Tori

I sent a message directly to Teresa with a link to a report that does state you can get both false positives and false negatives if the sample is not washed right. If you want to look for the report just do a search for coombs test false positive. I didn't try to post the link here because i was worried about getting blocked. Keeping my fingers crossed for Phoenix and the wonderful woman who reached out to him. And additional thanks to Teresa who was going to go get him if no one else did. :)
