I have a question for all of you helpful experts :) I'm a little concerned that we may be looking at a relapse for Slinky. It's too soon to say for sure, I'll be taking her in for a PCV today. If it's low/lower than her latest trends, is it worth asking for a Coomb's test? We did not run one with her at diagnosis, we had started pred immediately. Have we missed the boat on this entirely by not doing it immediately, or is it worth asking for now (if she is indeed entering relapse)? I'll post her results when I have them. Her gum color is still good as is her appetite, but she was extremely lethargic last night, seems a bit better today though. Hoping she's just feeling lazy...

Stephanie, It is important to remember that some times a Coombs test will be negative in an AIHA/IMHA dog. You might want to read this site: http://www.vin.com/VINDBPub/SearchPB/Proceedings/PR05000/PR00152.htm Which tells you about the three hallmarks for reaching a definitive diagnosis of IMHA: If you are very concerned about a relapse you might ask your vet to look for Spherocytes or Autoagglutination. Also I have heard some about this test http://www.vet.ksu.edu/depts/dmp/service/immunology/dif.htm for IMHA at Kansas State which you might also want to ask your vet about.

False alarm, Slinky's PCV was still very high. I may have her rechecked in a few days.... I fear she will always live under the shadow of this disease. Any slight deviations in her behavior and we break into a run for the vet's door. I did learn that our beloved vet is returning to the practice this month. Her fast action and absolute lack of hesitation to seek help from a specialist played a huge role in Slinky's victory and I will rest easier knowing she's back on our team :)

Stephanie - That's great news! I was concerned to see your note yesterday and completely understand the notion of being constantly vigilent! Take care - hope all is well with you and your family. Bonnie
