Hi all, Juat wanted to update you on Holly. I am so very confused! I am waiting as I type this for a call from the vet. They faxed her CBC and new retic blood reports over this afternoon. Start with the retic count. It has come down some since Monday, we had the blood draw done yesterday (Thursday). On Monday her absolute retics were 412680 and yesterday they were 381100. Her corrected retics on Monday were 6.7 and yesterday 5.6. So they are dropping in just 3 days. Now to her CBC: And again we did not have on Monday because the blood was clotted. So I am going by her last one on Jan 7th. Hemoglobin on Jan 7th 13.7, Jan 31 10.3 (L) Hematocrit on Jan 7th 43.2, Jan 31 36.4 WBC on Jan 7th 3.2 (L) Jan 31 10.0 MCHC on Jan 7th 19.8, Jan 31, 28.3 (L) Platelete count on Jan 7th 399, Jan 31 621 (H) Neutrophilis on Jan 7th, 2080, Jan 31, 8500 Moncocytes on Jan 7th, 192, Jan 31, 600 Everything else on the CBC was normal withouth much change. So again, I am very confused and hoping for the call from the vet or internist which is like pulling teeth! Thanks, Linda

Linda, The number of reticulocytes will decrease (in circulation) as each retic drops its RNA and turns into a mature blood cell. Hemoglobin will be lower now because there aren't enough mature blood cells to carry it along. Once they mature, there will be more hemoglobin available to the body. This only takes a few days in most cases. Mature red blood cells have a normal life span of about 160 days give or take. As they wear out, the bone marrow will make more cells and they should mature in the marrow. The old blood cells will be broken down by the spleen and the "stuff" will be disposed of. Your hematocrit, 36, is not very low. It is a few points below the low normal range. Quite satisfactory. White blood cells overall are in normal range. Platelets are somewhat high. There can be a few causes of this. Check with your internist. Whatever provoked the response by the bone marrow to produce a high reticulocyte count seems to have subsided. Patrice

Patrice, The only thing our local vet did not know about is why her WBC went up so much even though now in normal range. The WBC has been in the low 3's since August when the Azathioprine was started, and now this jump to 10 which I am happy but still don't know why this happened. Unfortunately I do not speak with the internist, only our local vet does, she only ever keeps touch with him. Linda
