I was wondering if anyone has dealt with their dogs belly area looking darker than normal. I thought that I read about it here before but I can not seem to find anything in my searches. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Johnny & Tessy

Just one more thing.... Has anybody used Omeprazole as a stomach protectant? Any info or advise on this would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, Johnny & Tessy

Hey Johnny, Tiggs belly is also now very dark. I think their belly's can turn darker for a couple of reasons- allergies, hypothyroid, and the meds, or a combo of the above. Maybe the next time you go for a PCV or CBC, have them run the thyroid panel just in case. I don't know about the Omeprazole, Tiggs has always been on Pepcid (famotidine). Hope your little gal is well, melissa and tiggs

Melissa, it was actually you that gave me the idea some time ago to have a thyroid panel done. Turned out Tessy's thyroid numbers were on the low side. I had the blood sent to Dr. Dodds and on her recommendation Tessy was put on thyroid meds. Tessy's been on these new meds since Tuesday night...not quite a week now. Hopefully this will help things out. Is Tiggs having a good long weekend? Did you make him any Easter Eggs? Hope all is well. Give him hugs from Tessy and I. Johnny & Tessy

I found out recently that the skin issues with the thyroid can take 6-8 weeks to improve, so I wonder if the coloring will improve. I know allergies play into that too, I suspect with Spring in the air, lots of dogs are experiencing the coat changes- dandruff, black skin, shedding, itching, etc. I know all three dogs in our house are going bananas right now. Interestingly, my vet said that hypothyroid is also a 'clinical disease' like IMHA, in other words, numbers don't always equate to exactly what's going on. In our case, Tiggs' dandruff has gotten so bad (despite special shampoos, loads of Omegas, better food, frequent brushing, etc), that we just increased the Thyrotab dose a teeny bit. I'm hoping this will help his coat. And, his tummy is also still black. We'll see! Happy Easter to you too, Tiggs' is out in the yard misbehaving right now as we speak- though it is good when I see his mischievious side ;) Hugs to Tessy, melissa and tiggs
