Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - cocos new test results

Good News everyone!! We are just back from the vets and her blood work continues to improve. Her hct is now at 14.68 up from 14 two days ago and her platelets are up to 153!! We go back on Monday for more bloodwork to make sure she is continuing this trend. She is still on a bland diet and restricted to frequent small meals which is making her crazy because wants to eat everything in sight, but she is improving baby steps at a time. Have a great weekend everyone..my thoughts are with you....Kelly

Kelly, I'ld still be a bit concerned if I were you. A jump in PCV of only under a point is not quite as good as one would think. Sorry...I really don't want to ruin the happy moment but I'ld still keep a really good eye on COCO. This is still a dangerously low PCV.
I can't see how it could hurt to give Coco a little bit more food...since it is bland. Might make her feel much better also.
Try to keep COCO well rested and eating properly till Monday.

Hoping and praying for positive results on Monday.

Hi there,

I agree with Johnny. While it is terrific that the numbers have not fallen, 14-15 is still considered critical, at the point where some vets would want to do a blood transfusion. Until Monday, I would definitely try to keep Coco as quiet as possible. Some would think that with a pcv of 14, she would be pretty out of it and tired but I personally know that isnt always the case. When my Jacob's pcv was 9 and we went in to see a specialist, the specialist came in the room, apologized and walked back out. A few moments later she walked back in the room and said she thought she had the wrong room at first because she said "no dog at 9% should be up jumping around" and that is exactly what my Jacob was doing. The specialist was amazed at how much energy Jacob had. She said he should have been laying on the floor with his head down. Well, not my boy. Lol! Anyways, just keep a close eye on your girl over the weekend. Hopefully on Monday you will see even more of an increase in that pcv!

Thanks for everyones thoughts while it isn't a big jump it is moving in the right direction at least. You guys are right about her low numbers though the vet told me to be sure that she is being kept quiet and restful and we have increased her food so she is happier about that as well!lol I'll keep you guys posted...Kelly

Kelly,
Yes, 14 is still very dangerously low but I understand your joy in any move upwards. Hang on to the positives but be well aware that Coco is still in the very worrisome numbers. It is very good that she wants to eat. My dog did not want to eat even when she got to 20. That was discouraging for us because they would not let her go home from the ER until she ate. Hopefully Monday her numbers will increase significantly and you can really enjoy the moment.

Thanks Penny..What kind of dog do you have and how is he/she?

And to everyone I would hate to gross you out but coco had a normal poop today !!!!! I find it strangely pathetic to get excited about a normal poop but oh well I guess thats how it goes lol Have a great day...Kelly
