I thought I had better post a second message about reducing our dog Sheba’s Atopica. Some of you read the message that Savannah’s owner posted in the thread and replied to her. (I’ve started a new thread for Savannah so hopefully there will be some more replies for them.) Here’s my original post and I am going to include some additional information. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions/insight! (My thanks to Patrice from NYS for her thoughtful and helpful reply!) Original Post: I am looking for some information about what to expect as we get closer to weaning our GSD mix Sheba, off of her Atopica. Currently she is taking 250 mg (125 mg morning and evening) daily and we are down to 5 mg of pred every other day for the next week. If her PCV is good next Thursday, we will stop the pred and retest in two more weeks. If we are holding steady then, we will reduce her Atopica. When I talked to the staff at ISU’s veterinary teaching hospital (she was diagnosed and treated there in the beginning) they said we would most likely cut her dose of Atopica in half to 125 mg once per day for two weeks… then more blood work, further reductions, etc. Is this normal or should I be talking to them about a slower reduction? When I asked our local vet (wonderful, very knowledgeable guy – saved Sheba’s life by referring us to ISU) he agreed that this sounded appropriate. What should I expect for further reductions? Additional Info: Sheba is a 49.8lb, 11 year old, spayed German Shepherd/Cocker Spaniel/Norfolk Terrier/Pug mix. (GSD is the predominant breed with some Cocker Spaniel traits once you know it’s there. We were totally blown away by the revelation about the other two breeds!) She was diagnosed on April 3rd of this year and spent 6 days at ISU’s VTH in the ICU. She required 1 transfusion. Her PCV has been holding steady at 45 for the last 8 weeks or so. If all goes well we should be totally off the pred in about a week. After that it will be two weeks pred free, another PCV test and if we are still holding steady – we’ll begin reducing the Atopica. I’m just looking for other people’s experiences/thoughts/recommendations.

I have a 2 yr old Newfoundland who has been on Atopica for a year, she was dowm to 3 tabs every 6 days, she weighs 70kg hence the large dose. Shes relapsing so now is back to every 3 days, if this does not work she will have to go back to 3 a day and see what happens, I hope it will work. Susan

Susan: I'm sorry to hear that your Newfoundland is not doing well at the moment. Hopefully she will do well on the every 3 days dosage. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Rita and Sheba
