Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Choe -two years later

I am almost afraid to write this post. I have spent two years worrying, having blood tests done every few weeks, following an initial four time blood transfusion regimin with an original hct of 9. Choe was stricken in August of 2006 after an application of Frontline. Frontline is full of pesticides and toxic products. I have learend a lot in the past two years that pretty much sicken me regarding what big pharma can do with products for pets and get away with. I've written before letting folks know my plight and strongly recommending they never use commercial flea control products. However, that's not why I am writing today. After mamy months of up and down readings and manipulating pred doses, we are finally atan EOD regimin with a minimal dose of pred (0.5).
Never thought we would get to this place.
I am hopeful but tentative in my goal to wean my boy off this drug after so long. His liver enzymes, natch are a high read. But he is happy and robust and his body shape has returned. If St, Francis, the patron Saint of animals is looking down I ask that he let my boy thrive as he continues to 'talk' (bark) to people on the street introducing himself visibly telling folks life is just grand. He knows. He has been through some tough times. I was feeling his pain with him, maybe double as I never quite could forgive myself for giving him the treatment that began this nightmare.
We pray for one another's beloved pets...some we can't save, others are more fortunate. We learn from each others experience. I will never, ever use a commercial product again on my pets and I will be hopeful every day that my boy rolls into his ninth year of life cranking out those red blood cells like his current reading of 54! Jan,
Congratulations to you and to Choe!!!!! That is fantastic!!! So happy for you both!!!!

I know you and Choe have been fighting a few months longer then us and our Holly and it is truely amazing that our doxies have survied this and all that we have put them through. Our Holly looks like a patch magic kid with both of her sides shaved from two weeks ago from the ultrasound, but at least I know her insides are good, and yes the hair will eventually grow back. She never seems to mind, HA!

Don't ever blame yourself for giving him the frontline!!! Oh if we only knew then what we know now. Sometimes we just want to shout it from the rooftops not to use these chemicals and wish that everyone would hear us.

Tomorrow we start our 2 week decrease on the pred down to EOD still at 2mgs, we just got done with 2 weeks EOD on the aziathioprine and all is good!

So give CHoe (5 paws up) from Holly and me!!!

Jan,
Wow I can't believe it has been that long since you first posted about Choe. I am so happy for you both.
I sometimes think people turn a deaf ear when I go on about the harm of pet products and over vacinating but if it helps just one single dog it will be worth it.
I am sorry we all had to learn so much the hard way
but hopefully some day things will change.
Canine kisses from my dogs to Choe.

Congratulations to you and to Choe!!
Thanks for posting as you give the rest of us inspiration and hope! Also interesting as I applied Frontline about 10-14 days before Alex was diagnosed.

Jan, never be afraid to give us good news. It give us all hope. I'm so happy for you and Choe. And thanks for the heads-up on Frontline. Didn't know about that. Have never used it and now I know I never will.

God bless you and Choe.

Jan,

Thanks for posting the great news about Choe. It's always encouraging to hear something good. I used Frontline on Darcy, but not every month as the package and the vet recommended. I wish I'd never put that horrible stuff on her. Now I'm seeing on tv all the broadcasts about how to treat pets naturally for fleas and ticks. Too bad we weren't hearing that a long time ago.

May Choe continue to thrive and be his friendly, robost self.
