Chloe was admitted to the animal hospital again today. Her pcv was only 12 this morning, so they are doing a blood transfusion because she was so weak. They also gave her an injection of cyclosporine, so I hope these meds start to kick in fast! We have an apt. with a specialist on 3/31 (she's on vacation)...I hope and pray that Chloe will remain stable until we can see the specialist. I miss her and want her home!!

| I am so sorry to hear about this. A pcv of 12 is very low and does need a transfusion. I am very surprised that you cannot see a specialist until the 31st. If they knew the condition of Chloe, they would not make you wait that long. In a case like this it might be advisable to contact Dr. Jean Dodds for some advice. She will provide you with some help, free of charge. Dr. Dodds has been involved in canine hematology for nearly 30 years and will have something to say to help you. In our case, I contacted her because all treatments had failed so far and our specialist was stymied about what to do. Chance's case was very extreme. She saved his life with her advice. If you do contact her, be prepared with your paperwork you have gathered from the vets and know the numbers on the cbc so you can read them or write them to her. Have a complete list of all treatments that have been given so far. Present this information in a concise way. She is a very busy person so I found it was best to send very short emails and highlight the details I wanted to draw her attention to and only ask one or two questions at a time. I always put Chance Lockhart in the subject line so she can keep track of all the emails she gets. She will also accept faxes and asks that they be less than 11 pages. As she always seems to do, she never charges, unless you have blood work done with Hemopet (or purchase donor blood) and then the charge is for the workup, the consultation is done as part of that charge. I know that she would always accept donations to Hemopet. I am sure she will find an appropriate place to put the money to work for animals. Here are the direct contact numbers. Please remember she is west coast so be considerate of her time zone. She also wishes to be able to have her prayer time on friday nights into saturday mornings uninterrupted if possible. Please consider contacting her today. | I am so very sorry to hear that Chloe is back in the hospital. Let's hope that the transfusion buys her the time she needs in order for the medications to start to work. Since the specialsit you have an appointment with on the 31st is on vacation, you might want to check on this Web site http://www.acvim.org/Specialist/Search.aspx and see if you can find a specialist in your area who can see Chole ASAP. Please know that both you and your dear Chole are in my thoughts and prayers during these most difficult days. |

I agree with Patrice about contacting Dr. Dodds. My little one, Daisy, also has an extreme case and was not responding to the treatment. But with Dr. Dodds suggestions we are seeing better results but still have a long way to go. Godd luck and will keep Chloe in my prayers. Evelyn and Daisy

Can Dr. Dodds call my vet and speak with them? I don't have a printout of Chloe's bloodwork so I wouldn't be able to give her numbers.

Since you are having to wait so long to get some expert care, it might be a good idea to call Dr. Dodds. She may answer her phone or it may go to the machine. Leave a brief message that includes your name and phone number, your email address, and the original diagnosed PCV of 12. Mention that you don't have a specialist visit until the 31st and that you are not sure about the rest of the blood work. She will ask you questions about the meds you are using now. I can't say for sure what she will tell you but you do need to bounce off some questions about Chloe's care to someone! The specialist you picked from the list at the ACVIM was the closest to you? Were there any others that were somewhat close? Has your regular vet inputed any advice about a special clinic or vet that they are affiliated with? Patrice
