Hello all, I haven't been here in a long while and I started reading through recent posts and contemplated replying here and there but then thought I'd just put some comments and thoughts into a new post. For those of you who are newly diagnosed and fighting please do not give up and this forum can be your saving grace I know it was for me! I visited the forum today as I was just to the vet and we were told no more imuran (we weaned down to 1/4 tab 2x per week)and I realized we were coming up on a year since diagnosis. Briefly, my 4 year old (at the time) miniature pinscher Chip was diagnosed on January 13 of this year just days after getting his vaccines. It was a battle to be sure with many ups and downs. The prednisone led to diabetes in February and as of now that is where we are insulin shots 2x per day every day but I have to say it worries me to be stopping the imuran. I also had a fright when reading the posts as we have fleas for the first time ever, we didn't treat with anything but baby shampoo and vacuuming. But it seems an endless battle... so when I went to the vet the other day they told me frontline would be fine to use (it was applied on the 25th) and now I'm freaking out after skimming some posts!!! Chip will never get vacs again but has always taken Heartguard but this is his first exposure to Frontline (worried!). Sherri P.S. Way back when someone was kind enough to point me to a site where I might make a claim about the vaccines -- if anyone can point me there again (now that my head isn't spinning like it was then) I'd be grateful!

I wrote directly to the vaccine compnay, the details I got from my vet. They didn't accept responsibilty but offered to pay half of our fees as a gesture of good will. (Not had it yet though!) Word your letter carefully, lay no blame but show you know about the possible causes. Good luck Steph

Sherri, I hope and pray that your Chip will be okay with the Frontline. My vet also tried to tell us that it was okay to use, in fact they even called Merrick, but I told them NO! Merrick told them oh it is absorbed into the skin only and perfectly fine , but to me if it goes into the skin it will go into their blood. Holly was given her vaccines as well as Frontline at the rescue we got her from, and we are not sure which one was the exact cause. Linda

Frontline is oil based. It is designed to go into the sebaceous (oil) glands and be dispensed as the sebaceous glands release body oil on a regular basis. The tick or flea actually is "slugging" their way through the oil on the skin and that is how the drug is able to act on the tick. Please read this excellent webpage about tick prevention (and see the section on Frontline) written by a good friend Gil Ash: http://blackgsd.googlepages.com/prevention
