My 2-year-old Aussie, Lola, was diagnosed with IMHA on September 1 (Labor Day here in the States). Luckily, she didn't need a blood transfusion and responded reasonably well to medication (Prednisone and Azathoriprine). However, after three months, it's becoming clear that she's going to be on meds for a very long time. I wanted to see if there was anything I could do for my Lola girl in the area of nutrition or supplements or even acupuncture to get her RBC count up. I searched the Web and found a lot of supplements, but I had no clue if any of them would be good for her. On the recommendation of a friend, I made an appointment yesterday with a new Vet clinic in Minneapolis that specializes in acupuncture and holistic medicine for pets. I'm not going to go into everything he said about the philosophy of holistic treatment -- partly because I don't understand it completely yet -- but it was very interesting. He made a few suggestions: 1. Limit vaccines (that seems to be a popular opinion:), 2. Give her Qing Ying Tang (in addition to her current medication) - a Chinese herb to "cool her blood", and 3. Change to a lower-carb dog food like Innova Evo or Core (she is currently on ProPlan). Carbs are seen as a type alergan in dogs, and contributes to the "wet" in her blood. I am wondering if any of you out there has tried holistic treatment in addition to conventional for IMHA? Thanks, Connie (and Lola, too)

i had tried it at the top of the year... 2 different chinese medications for SWAY's severe allergy issues that she has always had... Gui pi teng & External Wind. this was all before she came down with AIHA. we discontinued the chinese meds probably around the end of april because they werent offering us much relief ... and my dog was actually diagnosed with AIHA 2 months later in july. i have no idea if they are related, so many things could have contributed or caused the anemia, but i have always wondered. you never know and that is the worst part. with that being said, my advice is to still consider things if you think it could help...this is a VERY serious disease and alot of dogs react differently to different things. just gather as much information as you can and make an educated decision with your vet based on the pets best interest. dont give up and good luck to Lola

Hi Josh, Thanks for the feedback. I guess the word of the day is not to give your dog anything unless you talk to a professional you trust. And, actually, Lola is doing pretty good -- thanks for your kind thoughts :) Connie

The Qing Ting Yang (or something) must be working! I brought Lola in for a CBC this morning (12/17) and her RBC count is up to 4.59 -- that's the highest it's been since she got sick. Here WBC and HBB are normal, HCT is near normal. Best, Connie
