Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - charlie update 5-10

Charlie had his four week check today and is doing great. His PCV is 44! but the diarhea is coming back after being on metro... for 3 weeks. The vet wants to keep him on the metro... and taper him off. He also wants to reduce the azathiaprine to 2 times per week from every other day. Im a little nervous about it, but i totally trust charlies dr. He seems to think that the azathiaprine is part of the diarrhea problem.

Hi Carol,

Great news for Charlie. I think we have posted this before, but if not, try a tablespoon or two of canned pumpkin (not pie filling though). Also, we found steamed white rice mixed with the food helped with soft poop too.

Good job Charlie! Way to go!

Thanks melissa, we have tried the pumpkin, and it worked ok... charlies dr, thought it could also have the reverse effect in some cases. As much as i love to go see my vet (who is very cute) I want this all to be all done and charlie to be ok. But i know this is going to be a lifetime of wondering.

Ginger's usually has loose bowls and I do think it is from the med's, she does not go frequently but when she does go it is usually very loose. Boiled white rice does seem to help her. She acts and eats fine so I am not too concerned, since she does not go more then 2x a day.

Hugs to Charlie

I see smeone else suggest the pumpkin and rice. I agree that those are good to try.

It is great his value is so high. I hope it remians there for years and years!

That's a great PCV for Charlie! 44 is solid...hopefully where he wants to be!
I had the same problem with Tessy....diahrrea. As mentioned above, pumpkin worked remarkably well. I did however find that if I gave her too much of the pumpkin her stool would start to get loose again?!?!? Tessy weighs 35 pounds and I give her about 1 level teaspoon a couple times a day. The odd days when she gets something special in her diet (the other day I gave her beatgreens) the diahrrea comes back. All I do then is feed her bland food for 24-48 hrs and this usually clears things up. If none of the above works you should have a fecal examination done to check for bacteria or parasites.

Give Charlie hugs from Tessy and I and hang in there...things will get better with time.

Thanks Johnny, Charlie has responded so well to the meds and his energy level is pretty normal. I had him for only 2 weeks when he got sick. He's such a sweet dog. The diarrhea is actually better now he has been on metro... Antibiotic to help. And now that the axathiaprine has been reduced to 2 times per week its made a big difference.
