Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Cassie's doing well

Well it's now 3 weeks since our baby Cassie went drug free and without wanting to tempt fate, she is doing so well it's hard to imagine she was ravaged by this horrible disease. We took her to the vet last week for her routine blood test and her PCV level was at 42 and all the other levels came back from the specialists as normal. We were concerned that she was losing her undercoat but since she stopped the preds it seems to be growing back quite rapidly so she is looking something like her old self again. Her weight is now back to what it was pre illness and her appetite, although good, is no where near as voracious as it has been. It really is the biggest relief to see her running around playing once again although she still sometimes struggles to jump on the bed. Where as before she would spring up there with the power of a small kangaroo she now sometimes gets her front paws up then turns round to look at you as if to say "go on then, give me a lift" Now whether that is lack of strength or shes just playing the wounded soldier a bit too much we'll never know but we keep falling for those puppy dog eyes and giving in to her. She's worth it though because after what shes been through the last few months if she wanted an escalator putting in to help her I think we'd do it. She has been so brave and so good and fought like a trojan throughout all the problems and come out the other side barking.
So to all of you who are still fighting, keep heart because there is hope. Our thoughts will always be there for each and every one of you.

Steve and Sue, I'm so glad to hear that Cassie is doing well and drug free. She is a lucky girl to have two such devoted owners - your love for her shines through in your posts. Take care and give Cassie a big hug.

Yahoo! Congratulations! That is great news!

Newman sends Cassie a high-five. He is 4 days med-free (I think I could actually count it in hours - these first few days off meds have been a little stressful). ;-)

A big Yippee for Cassie and family. I do understand about the escalator part. Our pets give us so much joy and unconditional love how could you deny them anything.
