Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Carpet licking?

I was just reading the archives and saw that licking the carpet is a sign of Pancreatitis? Why is that? Its strange but Wiley has been licking the carpet & floor for years. I have always assumed he is just looking for something left behind. Are there other symptoms that I should be looking for? He has an appointment on Thursday so I want to mention this. Thanks!

Lisa -

I had a miniature schnauzer who battled pancreatitis and, in my experience, you would be seeing other signs as well such as vomiting, disinterest in eating, discomfort (pacing, shifting positions, panting). Pancreatitis can be a very painful condition and most dogs don't mask the symptoms.

Hopefully, you aren't seeing those signs. If you are concerned, ask your vet to run a "spec cPl" (canine pancreas-specific lipase) - it's considered a much more definitive diagnosis for pancreatitis than the standard chem profile (vets used to look at amylase and lipase levels).

Lisa,
There would be other signs if it was Pancreatitis. That is a very painful condition.
My dogs all lick the carpets I think in the hopes of finding some lost goody or maybe another dog had sat in that place recently. I tell them they cannot do that unless they are willing to clean the entire room.

Lisa,
If he has been doing this for years without symptoms then I would suspect a misplaced grooming instinct called a displacement behavior. Some dogs lick themselves until they are raw, others just lick or suck on things like carpets, blankets, toys etc. They do this to cope with some stress they feel. Unless it is causing damage to himself or the house, it's ok to just ignore it.

If you got him from a breeder, give them a call, they probably have seen this already. It is pretty common and not cause for concern.

Well, there is certainly no loss of appetite. lol. But no other symptoms either. I just thought it was weird because he has done it since he was a puppy. I always thank him for his help cleaning, but really he doesnt do that good of a job. haha.

A sign of seizures maybe????

Hi Lisa,
Just wondering what Wiley's blood count might be. My Havanese, Bandit started licking the carpet, tile floors, and cement pool deck. I brought him to the vet's to be checked and learned he was severly anemic. (Now diagnosed with AIHA) Licking or ingesting strange items can be caused by anemia. It's called pica. I don't want to cause alarm, but in Bandit's case, he had few symptoms of being so sick.
