Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Cappuccino

My dog Cappuccino, 17 months old, has been diagnosed with AIHA five days ago. He had blood transfusion and is now on medications. His temperature was 40,1 degrees Celsius, but now is normal. He isn't so pale as he was just three days ago.
Before this he could eat almost anything. Now, it is difficult to make him eat his regular food. do you have some advice on food problem? What kind of food did you give to your dog?
Please help!

Don't worry too much about his appetite. It takes a few days for the medication to start working but once it does you won't have any problems getting him to eat! An increase in appetite is one of the side effects we all see. My Ernie didn't want to eat at all for over a week, but about 6 days after starting the steroids his appetite suddenly picked up and now he can hear the fridge door at 50 paces!

When Shadow was first diagnosed, she would eat two or three SMALL bites of canned dog food, fed to her from a spoon, once or twice a day (otherwise, she ate nothing, not even baked chicken or liver). Like Sue's Ernie, once the medications kicked in, Shadow's appetite returned, then skyrocketed. She'll eat anything and everything anytime, all the time. I suspect that Cappucino's appetite will return when his meds take effect. In the meantime, if it's available in beautiful Croatia, you might try spoon-feeding him Merrick's "Rocky Mountain Rainbows" - a canned dog food that STINKS, but is made from all natural ingredients and that stimulated Shadow's appetite in the early days of the disease.

Best of luck to you and Cappucino!

Martina,
My cocker eats dry lamb and rice dog food. And small treats like small "milkbones". What did your animal specialist say about this?
Best wishes for both you and your dog.

Martina,
As long as Cappuccino is drinking water that is the most important thing initially so as not to get dehydrated. The vet reminded me that dogs stuck down holes can survive on no food for at least a week as long as they have water.

Jasper was enticed with everything from, cooked chicken, prescription dog food, cottage cheese, yoghurt, biscuits, anything at all. To be honest he refused it all, even turning his face away so I tried rubbing things on his teeth just to get him interested in food.

He started eating dry dog biscuits first, and that was about 4 days into the disease. After that he would eat chicken and a little beef. Now he eats anything......even sprouts!

Just try anything and everything. Even the smallest amount as long as you can get something in with the medication.

When the steroids kick in it will be harder to stop them eating.....then it will be anything and everything.

Good luck ,

Martina....my dog would not eat anything and then vomited almost everything she would eat back up initially. She was hospitalized for 5 days and on an IV so she was getting nourishment that way along with a blood transfusion etc. We had a heck of a time the first week home. Now...she will eat anything.
She would never eat carrots or lettuce and now she will if it is offered.
She got sick in July, and seems to be getting her old traits back even though her blood work is not back to normal. Last Friday night she found one of my 3 month old grandson's booties, and chewed it up and ate it. Luckily, it appeared on the back lawn this afternoon. I had visions of her getting a bowel obstruction to add to her problems.
Good luck to you and Cappuchino, it takes a while...
