Does anyone know if red blood cell count can lower significantly from exercise? Kola's PCV took a strange dip a month ago (from 48 to 34), but within the next week was moving up again and today was well within normal range (44 at appt today). I'm wondering if that test result might have been a fluke - it WAS the more reliable spin test however. But another hypothesis I'm wondering about is that he had several days of vigorous exercise with his close doggie pal.

Leslie, This is interesting. Just today I thought, how much exercise is too much for Kahlu? I am not so much worried about his blood count. He has been in the low 40ies with his HTC for at least 6 weeks now, so I am fairly confident he is stable. (Not that I always worry about a relapse) I am more concerned about him getting insured. Because all his muscle is gone I feel he is prone to insures since his ligaments and joints are not protected. I am hoping Patrice has some input, since you are a physio therapist? Kahlu has more energy and keeps up with pretty good walks and hikes, but I won't let him play with other dogs. On the weekend we had a fun trial and barbecue with the Agility club and I put him over some 10 inch jumps. He did ok, but dropped some with his hind legs. He is still pretty uncoordinated. I thought the dog walk and teeter could be good core exercises. I watched like a hawk that he did not fall off and he did pretty good. He was so happy to be out there. I feel he needs to build up his muscles some how. Is it too early to start this? Of course I am also curious about the impact on the red cells. I would love to hear from some Agility people, I know they are out there. Best wishes to everybody, Brigitte & Kahlu

I wonder the same thing. I was always told to keep their activity to a minimum during the early stages of the disease but once the blood levels got to normal ranges, exercise can be slowly increased. I'm not too sure which is the correct route to take. Again...this is only what I was told. I've also heard that exercise will keep the blood flowwing better...thus helping to break up potential blood clots. Again...please don't quote me on this. Hopefully someone else can answer this a bit better than I. Good luck either way and give Kola some hugs from Tessy and I. Johnny & Tessy

It was slow going when Ren went into remission. Most of her muscles are wasted away. She seems to know her exercise limits. She goes for brief walks. She can not climb stairs or jump. I never push her to more than her body says she can handle. I realize that she will not be the spry little Chihuahua that she once was. SUE
