Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Bugy's Not doing Well

Hi All,
Well Bugy is back at the hospital. He wasn't eating. I tried everything but he still would not eat. He was wasting away . Even on the 30mg of pred we could feel his bones. Anyway we took him back on Thursday. They ran blood work and all his levels were good except for his Liver. It now looks like the high doses of meds took their toll on his Liver. Yesterday (Friday) they did a Liver aspiration/biospy and sent that out. We won't have those results until Monday or Tuesday. I hate this !!! They have lowered his cyclosporine to 30mg a day and added imuran and some antibotics and a few other things that I can't remember. I guess we will have to wait for the results and make a decision from that. Although Bugy has different Vet's each day I have kept in contact with the original admitting Vet and that is who we went to see on Thursday. She was very happy with all his levels except for the Liver stuff. I have kept in contact with her and she assures me she checks in on him when ever she is working. When I spoke with her yesterday she told me not to give up yet. I just don't know what to do. Am I putting Bugy thru all this for the wrong reason ? Am I being selfish and a coward keeping him here ? Is his body telling me it's time ? I just don't know anymore.

Lisa,
I am sorry that Bugy is back in the hospital. It is always hard to know with this disease which way to go sometimes. The one thing I do believe is if it is time Bugy will let you know. So until then fight the good fight and know a lot of people will be sending out good thoughts for you and Bugy.

Hi Lisa. Sorry to hear about Bugy. I think a lot of us on this site have wondered from time to time whether or not we were doing the right thing - I know I did at times with Duck. But Greg and I felt we owed him the best chance we could give him because he was fighting so hard to stay with us and also, because we love him so much. And so we forged ahead with specialists and all sorts of medications. I think Penny is right - Bugy will let you know when he's had enough. In the meantime, try not to be hard on yourself. What you are facing is hard enough without all that. I'm sure you love Bugy and that's what is motivating you to help him fight.

My thoughts and good wishes are with you. Please keep us all posted. And a big hug to Bugy from us.
