Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Bugy Updat 2/9

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to update you all on Bugy. Bugy has been home a week now. When he came home last Friday I really thought this was the end. He was so thin and looked lost in his eyes. He couldn't even walk more than two steps and even doing that it was a struggle. He is off the cyclsporine but continues on the pred, aspirin, marin, prilosec spirolotone (?) , and pet tab. His PCV is holding at 30/32 (yeah). His liver levels are still off. We continued to tbue feed him and he seems to have gained a little weight. It breeaks my heart when I come home from work and he's lying in his own pee because he isn't stronge enough to get himself up. He is walking much better once standing. He even wants to go out... Today was a really good day. He was able to get himsself to a standing position from a sit. His back legs are just so weak. We keep working with them hoping to build back some of the muscle he's lost. Any suggestions ? Today also was great since we have not given him one tube feeding !!! He seems to be liking food again !!! I think he's a fighter and I'm determined not to lose him after all he's gone thru.
Thanks for everyones good wishes. monday we go back for more blood work.
Lisa
P.S. He's meaner now than he ever was !!!

Lisa,
It is terrible to see the toll the drugs take on our poor babies, but if you haven't looked at Sue's video of her Ernie be sure to. There were times Sue wasn't sure what the outcome would be but watching hime tear around now you wouldn't know he'd been ill. It helps a lot to have hope and sometimes during the struggle it is a hatd thing to maintain. Keeping you in my thoughts.

Lisa...I would give Bugy Sulcrafate to protect his stomach in addition to the Prilosec.
The aspirin and the prednisone are both likely to create stomach ulcers. (I learned the hard way).
Glad to hear his PCV is good.
Good luck...Ron

Hi Ron, Trixie was put on Aspirin when she was in hospital, they said it would help with any blood clots, she of course is still on Pred. I have just read what you posted: "The aspirin and the prednisone are both likely to create stomach ulcers..
She is on Atepsin and Zantec (liquid form) to protect the stomach.

Hi Tricia and Ron. I asked the internist about possible drug interactions between aspirin and prednisone. At that time Duck was taking aspirin every day (I think?). Anyway, she said that yes there is a possibility of an interaction but that the blood clots were more serious than the possibility of an interaction. So she recommended that Duck cut back the aspirin to two times a week. That has worked. There haven't been any interactions and no clotting.

Thanks Debbie. I shall be seeing Trixie's vet this Tuesday,it's time for her full blood count to be done. I am wondering if I should mention about the aspirin and pred, oh dear I feel quite concerned now. Trixie is on 1 (75mg) Aspirin per day.
