Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Bringing Maggie home today

Maggie has been progressively improving since the setback last week. To my surprise, when I visited last night, she had been completely weened from the oxygen chamber and sitting happily wagging her tail in a larger pen. Her energy was even better this morning.

Her PCV was up to 26 yesterday from 23.5 the day before. However, she had just been given lasix.

Scheduled to pick her up this afternoon. I am nervous about what the vet will tell me, but she's looked better and better and they obviously feel she is strong enough to send her home.

I'll update in this thread later this evening.

Awesome news Robert!!! Don't be nervous, just take it one day at a time. It is a rocky road, but you are not the first one to have walked it. Maggie is a fighter and in your good hands she will be just fine.
Best wishes,
Brigitte

Thanks everyone. Maggie has reclaimed her home. She is ravenous and happy. I just fed her and she is now taking a well deserved nap.

While it is expected to be a long haul to help her heal her lungs/heart, there is a lot of good news.

Maggie's PCV is up from yesterday, from 26 to 30. And this is on 20 mg of Prednisone a day for an 80 lb dog. Still waiting for her CBC. The emergency hospital vet felt that the Prednisone gave Maggie Cushings Disease (pretty obvious when seeing what it was doing to her), that this contributed to her clotting. Given that the Azathiorpirne and Cyclosporine are suppressing her immunity enough, we can keep the pred dosage low and hope lower it after her next PCV/CBC in a week.

The emergency vet feels that the congestive heart failure is acute and will resolve along with her acute pulmonary hypertension. So she has a good chance of full recovery.

I feel Maggie's recovery will accelerate now that she at home. For one, she has free range of my home and plus she will rest better. Only walks are for urination and defecation for the next two weeks.

I am thrilled to have her home...
